and once again you've looped back to your arrogance cycle. welcome to step 1 again. besides, how do those scientists (who I'm willing to believe evolved from monkies... rofl ) know that they're not looking in the right direction for "truth".. what is "truth" speaking of which? ~Azula~

They accept something as true when they consider it, and they find that
a) It is possible for it to be proved/disproved if some discovery occured. b) It has evidence to back it up.
Or at least, that's how I work... no evidence = nothing. If there's no evidence for something, I'm jumping to no conclusions. I'm assuming nothing. And I'm especially not gonna beleive what was written in some old book...

the only thing I don't get is how does some 12 billion year old thing prove anything...
(note: 12 billion is just some random hypothetical number) ~Sokka~

Well, it proves that the universe is at least 12 billion years old. Whearas certain Bible Literalists belive that it is only six thousand years old... Lol.

but how do we KNOW that it's 12 billion years old? I mean, does that thing (whatever the 12-billion year old thing is) have a birthday that it celebrates?
how can we prove carbon dating? do we know that it decays at the same rate during years 1-10 as it does during year 646219?
(I actually have a more in-depth theory about the age of the earth than the old 6000 years old thing) ~Sokka~

Well, what about light? We've measured how fast light travels, right? And the light reaching us from starts would take X amount of time to reach us. Hence, we know about how long that light has been in excistence. And as the unverse can't be younger than the things in it, we can decipher that the universe is older than any light in it.

but how do we know that Galaxy X1-1088 is 5.9 trillion miles away?
I mean, a lot of these time/distance things seem to be estimates rather than facts...

Ah, but we can tell the distannt because of the colour of the light. Different sizes of suns have different light, and we can esimate their ages. And even with a genral estimation, we can tell that the light is billions of years old by the time it reaches us.

but how do we KNOW for a surety? I mean sure there can be reason to back up these theories, but the only way actually prove it would be to watch the cycle.
I mean, what if every 1,000,000 years a start changes color for an 1,000 year period of time or something?

Well, that's the thing. We perform experiments... (Like, say, the one that this thread was meant to be about) to view cycles like that. We find a way to recreate the events.

(lol...) understandable, but unless we can traverse time or such...
but yeah, not trying to disprove science... just trying to show how little of an understanding we have.... ~Katara~

And that's what science tries to do. Give us more. Give us a reason for everything... Not one reason for every single thing, obviously, but give everything a reason.

that's what religion tries to do too... I mean, science and religion have a lot "in common" per se...

Not if you think about it... I mean, really think about it. The problem is, as I see it, most people don't...
Some people even call Atheism a religion. That's like calling "bald" a hair colour...

well, a religion is a set of beliefs...
and that's what Atheism is... a set of beliefs... or a lack thereof... "bald" might not be a hair color... (lol what mroon thought of that) but it IS a hairSTYLE. ~Iroh~
