becoming an avatar

this is just a short story to sorta clear out my mind. i've had the idea, but i'm not sure how long i can make it. might just be one post. we'll see. i think its a pretty unique idea. i am terrible at thinking of names, so i stole one from ancient chinese history

a small group of teenagers were running down an alleyway in a small earthkingdom village. by the looks of it, the were playing a game like tag, but with earthbending. just as the sun was setting over the hills, a woman's voice called out.
"KYOSHI!!," the woman's voice called, loud over the teenagers giggles, "KYOSHI! come home! there is someone very important her to see you!"
"coming mother!" kyoshi called back. she waved goodbye to her friends and turned to walk home. her mother had probably only wanted her for a birthday surprise;she was turning sixteen today.
as she walked in the door, she called out to her mother, "i'm home!"
"ok come in here when your done!" her mother said, from the direction of the main room.
"i will once i wash off my facepaint." even on her birthday, kyoshi had to "train." her and her friends had a game going. they called themselves the kyoshi warriors, since kyoshi thought of the game. they wore facepaint on their faces and carried fans pretending to protect the village. the game was fun and the group actually considered themselves protectors of the village, although they've never had to fight anyone before.
"hurry now. someone very important is here to see you," her mother said, sounding anxious and excited at the same time.
"is this just a birthday surprise?" kyoshi asked her mother.
"somewhat..." her mother said.
as she walked into the main room of their hut, she didnt see a birthday surprise, or any party guests. who she saw was an earthkingdom government official, a rare sight anywhere out of ba sing se. her mouth opened in shock. 'an earthkingdom lord! here! where i live! was all she could think.'
"why dont you sit down, kyoshi," he suggested. kyoshi sat down, like a well trained dog.
"my name is laozi, and i work for the earth king," he said. kyoshi just sat there and nodded.
he looked like he thought she was mentally ill, but he pressed on. "i have come here with great news. firstly, happy 16th birthday," laozi said, not lookingvery happy.
kyoshi just sat there, mesmerized by his expensive clothes and jewelry. she didnt respond until her mother elbowed her in the back.
"thank you sir," kyoshi responded as politely as she could.
"that is not the only reason i am here, as you may have guessed. have you any idea why i might be here?" he said, ignoring her staring.
"no sir, i've no idea," kyoshi said, not needing the elbow to the back her mother gave her yet again.
"well, as tradition follows, the new avatar is announced on her 16th birthday." kyoshi in shock, looked confused. laozi went on, "you have jsut turned sixteen today, am i correct?"
"yes. just turned sixteen today. i'm very excited," kyoshi said, the words spillnig fast out of her mouth. she thought she new what he was about to say, but she needed to hear it from him.
"then congratulations are in order. you are the new avatar," he said, not sounding congratulatory at all.
it was kyoshi's mother that screamed first. then kyoshi joined as well. they were jumping up and down and screaming and crying with joy.
when they stopped, laozi said, "i'm glad to see your excited. you will travel immediately with me to ba sing se to commence your training," he said.

i think you have a thing going on for when they are informed of being the avatar you could also do the other 3 avatars before aang.

thanks! i thought it was a pretty good idea myself. maybe i will write one about the other avatars that we know of. seems like a good idea. except i couldnt do roku because we already know his story.

"thats great!" her mother exclaimed. kyoshi looked sort of sad as she realized something.
"but..what about my mother?" she said.
"what about your mother?" laozi asked.
"what will she do? if i leave she has no one. my father is dead. who will take care of her!" kyoshi said, almost yelling. she was angry at laozi's indifference in her life.
he looked like he didnt know what to say. he looked pleadingly at kyoshi's mother, "kae? can you talk to her about what we previously discussed?"
"yes," kae said, "kyoshi! my baby. come here." kyoshi stood next to her tiny mother. she was already a head taller than her, almost touching the ceiling.
"kyoshi! do you know how many avatars there are in the world?" she asked kindly.
kyoshi nodded. if she spoke she would cry. she didnt want to leave her mother.
"well you are that one person. the world needs you more than i do. and you cant worry about me. i'll be fine. you go do what you have to do and i'll stay here. we'll see each other again. i promise. now go pack your things." she said giving her daughter a hug. as kyoshi went to get her things, a tear slipped down her cheek.
"you take care of my daughter or you wont only have the rath of the avatar on you, but her mothers too," she said to laozi, no kindness in her voice this time.
a few minutes later, kyoshi returned, a small bag in her hands.
"i'm ready she said. but i would like to say goodbye to my friends first," she said.
laozi looked like he was going to say no, but kae said "go ahead, but hurry back," before he could.
kyoshi ran to the alley where she hoped her friends were still playing. she saw the glint of their fans and hurried forward.


its really short, but i have other things to do first. more later i hope.

"kyoshi! your back so soon! but wheres your face paint..and your fans?" one of her friends, chen, had said.
"i have news! its good and bad," kyoshi said quickly. without waiting for their response, kyoshi continued on,"a representative from ba sing se is at my house. it turns out that i am the new avatar! i'm to go to ba sing se immediately for my training!"
"but what about us?" one of the other girls said, "when we started the kyoshi warriors, we promise never to leave each other."
"i know! but this is different. i never expected i'd be the avatar!" kyoshi said, not understanding her friends hostility.
"so its a double standard? if you become the avatar, your allowed to leave? we're not good enough to become an avatar?" the girl continued.
'its not that way at all! i never expected any of us to become an avatar!" kyoshi exclaimed.
"but thats not what you just said!"
"well maybe i didnt expect you all to be so unsupportive! i thought since you were my friends it would be different!"
"well then you thought wrong!"the girl said.
"i thought when we started the kyoshi warriors, we said we'd always stay true to each other, no matter what happens. i am the avatar, and i didnt choose to be it. its a huge responsibility, even i know that, when i just found out. i already feel the pressure of the job. but i have no choice. i am not going to let the world down because your jealous!" kyoshi yelled. kae, a few lanes away, heard the whole argument, she had a sad smile on her face. "my kyoshi can take care of herself," she said, and headed inside to make tea.
when kyoshi arrived home, she took her fans and makeup out of her bag. she threw them on the floor. kae heard all the racket and wandered in the room. she picked up the makeup and the fans and put them back in kyoshi's bag. "wherever you go, whoever you meet, you must stay true to yourself and remember your beginnings," she said ot her daughter.
" you are very wise mother," kyoshi said.
"you become wise when you feel like your losing something."
"you are not losing me. i'm coming back for you, i promise."
"promises are easily broken."
"you think i will break my promise?"
"not of your own free will. you will be forced to break your promise."
after a moment, kyoshi, eager to change the subject, said, " where has laozi gone off too?'
"he went to the inn. he said you were too slow. you'll travel at daybreak tomorrow," kae said.
"i do not like him."
"he has faced much in his short life, you cannot judge him on a minute's greeting. you never know what will happen,"kyoshi opened her mouth to speak, but her mother silenced her with a glance. "he's 22,"she said,"and thats enough out of you. get to bed!"
"i swear, its like you can read my mind sometimes..." kyoshi said. with that, she went to bed.


i might come back and modify this later. but first, can you help me out a little? i need two tiny things first, if any of you know what kyoshi's animal guide (like appa) was, could you tell me? and i am terrible with names. could you reply with some good ones? thanks

thanks! well maybe i'll google it or make something up. i'm definitely planning on writing more, but i need names! i can never think of names. the ones i think of sound stupid. the only one i can think of is cho (like cho from harry potter). but i sorta came into this story blinded, but my eyes are adjusting to the darkness and i can see where i wanna go. its not gonna be too long, maybe the same length as my last fic.

do you have any idea, like what type of animal it would be?

thats what i was thinking, but then roku and aangs could both fly. maybe this could fly too. like some sort of bat? this is confusing and puts a damper on my story plans. but plans change and maybe i'll think of something. a badgermole seems like the best bet as of now. maybe its a bear? like how the earth knig had a bear and everyone was shocked? maybe its cuzz only kyoshi had one?

"kyoshi! its time to wake up!" kae sang to her sleepy daughter.
"whaa? its not even light out yet!" kyoshi mumbled in response.
"yes, but laozi is here and he wants to set off early."
"whyy? i only need a little more time to sleep. please?"
"i'm sorry, but its not my call. he wanted to avoid bandits or something."
"i have a bone to pick with that guy," kyoshi said as she got up.
that night, she hadnt slept well. the nights events played over and over in her head. her friends words stung her resting mind. she did not want to have to leave or see that lowsy laozi again. but she had no choice.
as she went to dress, she picked up her kyoshi warrior clothes. cho's mother had made them for the group. she remembered the words her mother had said to her, " never forget who you are." as she thought this, kyoshi slipped into her kyoshi warrior attire and put on her facepaint. this was who she was.
as she walked out to greet her mother and laozi, she smelt breakfast. hopefully she would have time to eat before they left. laozi looked confused when he saw her full-face makeup, but her mother just smiled a little.
as kyoshi sat down to eat, she looked at laozi. he looked different. he was reading a letter and smiling. he doesnt seem like he smiles a lot, kyoshi thought.
realizing the awkward silence, kyoshi felt the floor was hers and no questions off limits.
"how will we be traveling to ba sing se?" she asked first.
laozi looked a little surprised by the sudden talking, but he said, "we do not want to attracted much attention, so we will be traveling as peasants. there are some who would like to hurt you."
"i can imagine," was all kyoshi said.
laozi went back to his letter and smilled again. kyoshi realized he was actually a little handsome when he smiled. she pushed this thought out of her mind.
"who is that letter from," she said after a while.
"its from my sister in ba sing se. she is informing me that her husband has been asked to work for the knig. they will now be living in the upper ring," he said.
"what about you?" kyoshi asked, trying to sound like she didnt care.
"what about me?"
"where do you live?"
"in the upper ring."
"will i be staying with you?"
"it depends on what the king thinks."
"do you have a wife?"
"no."
kyoshi figured laozi was a man of few words and that she was trying his patience. she let the conversation rest.

"can you eat any slower?" laozi asked, full on sarcasm.
"i can if you want," kyoshi replied.
"well could you hurry up? i'd like to get going by daybreak."
"fine. what if i want to say goodbye?"
"you did that last night. now stop talknig and start eating."
"you are so not a morning person."
when kyoshi finished, she got up and found her mother, asleep in her bed. she gently shook her awake.
"mother," kyoshi said, her voice like a lullaby, "mom. i've got to leave now."
"remember what i told you, never forget who you are," kae replied, voice sounding like she didnt get any sleep.
"i'll make you proud."
"you already have."
"your making this harder than it is, mom."
"i'm sorry, kyoshi. but dont be sad. we'll see each other again."
"you sound so sure..."
"i am. its fate that you'll see me again, one way or another. just remember to write to me."
"i'll do more than that. i'll visit and send messengers and you'll be happy."
"i already am happy, as long as you are."
"kyoshi! we have to leave! the sun is rising!" laozi called from another room.
"we must part ways for now. i love you," kae said.
"i love you too, mom," kyoshi whispered.
she gave her mother a final hug and she left, promising once again to return as soon as possible.
they loaded up their ostrich horses, silent as the grave. when they were on the border of the village, laozi turned to kyoshi and said, "you know you wont see her for a very long time."
"i know," kyoshi replied.
they rode on in stony silence until kyoshi's curiosity got the best of her.
"where will i be staying?" he asked
"the king's letter said you are to stay with me in the upper ring," laozi said, not sounding pleased.
"oh... whats you house like?"
"its not bad."
"okay."
laozi ddint seem to want talk, but kyoshi found the silence iritating.
"when do yo think we'll get there?" she said.
"sometime tonight."
"you really dont like talking do you?"
"i find it hard to talk to you."
"why?"
"its a long story."
"we've got plenty of time."
