The Blind, Helpless Earthbender
A Tokka Story
Toph- “Man, not being able to see stinks!”
I stated loudly and abruptly.
Sokka- “I heard you the first five times Toph.”
He said it in an annoyed tone. I didn’t blame him either. I guess I had been complaining a lot recently. But the situation was just so frustrating, it was driving me insane. It had only been two days since Zuko had burned my feet and I felt as helpless as ever. My feet were the only things that brought vision to my blind and dark life. And now that they were gone, I’d become truly blind. Plus the burn was so painful that I couldn’t even walk on my own. That’s where Sokka came into the picture. Ever since the accident, he’d carried my everywhere I needed to go which, for me, was really weird. I’d always had this hard-core independent attitude. I hardly ever asked, or needed, anyone’s help and if I did I rarely admitted it. But the recent situation had changed everything. Unfortunately, I needed help. And even worse there was no way in denying it. I mean I could just sit in the same spot all day not doing a thing and just pretend the pain didn’t exist. But after awhile it’d be kind of obvious that something wasn’t right so that plan wouldn’t work. Besides I’d probably die of boredom before the first day had past anyway. I let out a big “sigh” inside my head. I was helpless. Which is why I was in Snoozles arms at the moment. We were on our way to one of my healing sessions with Katara which had recently become sporadic. Mostly because Zuko had joined our group and had immediately began teaching Aang firebending. Because Sugar Queen was so protective of Aang and so suspicious of Zuko she was with them during every training session. Which now meant she had very little time to spend healing my feet. I became angry at the thought. I mean didn’t she care if my feet got better or not? How could she go off to sit to watch Zuko and Twinkle Toes play with fire while I’m being carried around by Snoozles, helpless as can be? As true as it was, I calmed down. I knew that Katara cared about me and that she was only thinking about Aang’s safety. She was-
Sokka- “Ok we’re here Toph.”
He said, interrupting my thoughts. He then set me down on the edge of the fountain resting my feet comfortably in the water. The sudden feeling of the cold, brisk water felt amazing. It was just so refreshing. Being carried all over the place with my feet flying through the warm, dry air made the burning even worse. So every time they were put in the fountain there was this sweet, refreshing sensation that went over my whole body.
Toph- “Aaaaaa, that just gets better every time.” I said with a slight grin on my face.
Sokka- “Well I’m glad you feel better. Maybe you’ll stop complaining now.”
I couldn’t tell if he was joking with me or being serious. Either way, I’m sure he was tired of hearing my complaints for one day.
Toph- “Look I’m sorry I’ve been griping so much but this whole situation is new to me and it isn’t exactly easy.”
Sokka- “I know that. I wasn’t harshing on you or anything, just kidding around.”
Even though I couldn’t tell for sure, I felt that he was telling the truth. I mean this is Sokka. He was always cracking jokes, trying make everyone laugh. Doing what he could to make any bad situation feel a little better. It was one of my favorite things about him. I guess we had that in common seeing how I kind of sarcastic and witty myself. Suddenly the vibrations of Sokka standing up and walking away went through my hands, which were resting on the fountain’s ledge. I didn’t want him to go.
Toph- “Hey, where are you going?”
I could feel him stop to turn and look at me. I could only imagine the puzzled look on his face.
Sokka- “What do you mean? You’re here, your feet are in the water, and Katara won’t be too much longer. I’m going back to camp.”
The whole statement made it seem as if he didn’t care at all. It actually hurt to hear him say it.
Toph- “So you’re just going to leave me here by myself?”
Sokka- “I was. But now I don’t know. Why? Do you want me to stay?”
My stomach suddenly went into knots. I knew the answer to the question but I didn’t want to say it. Why was so hard to talk to him? Why couldn’t I just tell him “Yes, I want you to stay.” I didn’t get it. So I denied it.
Toph- “No. You can do whatever Snoozles. I don’t care.”
There was a tremble in my voice. I was lying to him and myself. And he knew it as much as I did. He started walking back toward me and chuckled.
Sokka- “You know I don’t have to have truth-telling abilities to know that you’re lying to me.”
Toph- “Shut up Snoozles. I really don’t care.”
I said in continuing denial.
Sokka- “Well alright you’ve convinced me. I’m staying.”
He sat next to me in complete defiance of what I’d just told him. Of course secretly I was celebrating. I knew that I wanted him to stay and that was all that mattered.
Toph- “Do what you want Snoozles.”
There a long silence. I don’t think either knew what to say. I sort of expected him to say something seeing how he was the one who decided to stay. But he just sat next to me quiet as can be. It was driving me insane. I had to break the silence.
Toph- “So………..”
I rubbed the back of my neck, a clear sign that I was nervous. I honestly didn’t know what to say.
Sokka- “So what?”
He asked in a puzzled tone.
Toph- “Well, what do you want to talk about? Sorry but all this silence is driving me crazy. I mean, if you’re going to be here you might as well talk to me. It won’t kill ya you know.”
He laughed finding what I said somehow humorous.
Sokka- “I guess you’re right.”
Again, the silence continued.
Toph- “Well?! Say something then.”
Sokka- “I don’t know, I had a question I wanted to ask you.”
Toph- “Spit it out Snoozles.”
Sokka- “Well, I guess I just wanted to know if you’re ok.”
I wasn’t completely sure what he meant by it.
Toph- “You’re going to have to be little more specific.”
Sokka- “Well now that your feet are burned, I know that you can’t see very well or at all. So I just wanted to know how you’re handling it.”
I was somewhat shocked. He had practically read my mind from my earlier thoughts. But that was all to myself. Now HE was asking the question to my face, right now. And what was worse, I didn’t have an answer for him.
Toph- “I don’t know Sokka. Am I?”
It was the only thing I knew to say. Because honestly I didn’t know. So all I knew to do was to get his opinion.
Sokka- “It seems like it. I mean besides that griping and groaning you been getting at recently. He laughed while he said this. But I also know that you have a hard time showing your true feelings to.
His voice became serious and stern. He wanted the truth from me. I took a deep breath.
Toph- “Well the truth is Sokka, I feel weak. Helpless, useless, and blind! Truly blind! And I just can’t stand feeling that way.”
Sokka- “Toph, for one you’re not useless, and you’re sure as heck not weak. But maybe yeah, you are blind temporarily and maybe a little bit helpless. But it’s not your fault. You didn’t ask Zuko to burn your feet so you have no reason to feel ashamed.”
It became quiet once again. But this time Sokka was the one to break it.
Sokka- “We all need help some time Toph. Even you.”
Toph- “So you don’t see me as this blind, helpless, little Earthbender?”
Sokka- “I’d never think that about you. What I see now is a strong, powerful bender who’s had an incident and is just on the road to recovery. And that’s all. I see Toph.”
I hadn’t realized it, but a single tear was rolling down my cheek. But I didn’t care. What he said meant so much. It would’ve coming from anyone. But to hear him say it meant the world to me. I wasn’t helpless, or useless, or even blind. I was still just as strong and now just as confident as I had ever been. A huge grin spread across my face. Sokka was right.
Toph- “Thanks Sokka.”
