sorry for the double post, but this is more story!
CHAPTER 2 The Waterbender’s touch was incredibly smooth. Right before she picked me up, my tiny hand had felt her foot. Like mine, they were bare.
“So,” I heard her mutter, “the Li Chan family has perished; a tragic thing has happened today. I loved them dearly. They were so sweet and kind. They left the little firebender though. That’s so terrible...”
I was listening. Being 3 years old, I knew my name, but she had called me a firebender. What did that mean? Who was this?”
“Sanaki Li Chan,” she said, and I was surprised that she knew my name, “my name is Kai Serenes. I will take care of you until you feel you are ready to depart on your own. Do not fear me. Fire may fear a waterbender, but I mean absolutely no harm.”
Considering she was talking to a 3-year-old, you think she would have been more baby-like, similar to Rafai and Karly. Now, don’t get me wrong, I had nothing against being talked to like a baby or like this woman was—this was just what my little 3-year-old mind was thinking. Some of Rafai and Karly’s words had stuck with me from a while back...
“She’s mighty intelligent, you know,” said Karly, “it’s a pity she’ll never be able to go to school...”
“She’ll use her knowledge in other places,” said Rafai, “this kid’s gonna be one awesome bender. I can see it in her—her hands, her feet—her face—she was built for it!”
“Maybe that’s why she called me a firebender,” I thought to myself; I wanted to learn what firebending was. If it was controlling fire like I thought I was doing, then I really wanted to know. That was really fun.
“Who are you?” I asked—I did know how to talk at age 3 after all; “I guess they were not lying when they said you were a gifted child,” Kai muttered, “my name is Kai—Kai Serenes. Since your foster parents have been killed, I will raise you and love you as my own.”
I had no clue who this was, but I put my tiny arms around her and embraced her. She had a very warm touch, and seemed very friendly. I didn’t care if she was a waterbender. What difference would that make?
Kai took me back to a small building just outside of the village. She told me it wasn’t much, but it was better than being homeless. The Li Chan home had been more welcoming, but I wasn’t ever too concerned with the quality of anything—except a personality.
“I don’t actually live here,” she told me; she seemed aware that I was analyzing my surroundings with my hands and feet. It was the original reason I went barefoot by the way.
“I am a wanderer.” Kai continued, “The fact that we met was possibly coincidental, but I think there was something else that led us there. You are allowed to do anything you want within my reasoning. I will tell you if there is something I disapprove of. As you grow older though, I do not want you spreading my name around. People know me, but I do not like attention. I just do my services and require no thanks.”
“Why,” I asked, “are people mean to you?”
Kai just chuckled, “Sanaki,” she said, “you are a very bright child. Just live your life as you would and I’ll be there to help you and remind you of my one request. Of course, if you feel it necessary to share my name, then do not hesitate to do so. I’m not going to stop you. The fact that you understand what I am saying is impressive in and of itself.”
I crawled over to where Kai was standing—I was off by a few feet, but she picked me up anyways. I was small for a 3-year-old, but Kai didn’t care. She took me and rocked me to sleep.
That night, I heard strange noises. I knew that I was dreaming. I had heard people say that they saw things when they dreamed, but, being blind, I only heard noises. I could feel myself older—much older. I could sense massive flames surrounding me, but I knew I was not in any danger. I was controlling these flames, and I was dashing around an unknown person. We were showing off our moves to each other. I could hear people behind me shouting “Agni Kai! Agni Kai! Agni Kai!”
I seemed to know what that was. “I’m gonna take you down, Swindler!” I heard him shout. I seemed to recognize that as a name. We suddenly got into position, and I found myself fighting. I was fast and defensive. Within minutes I had defeated my opponent and run off. As I was running, I suddenly sprung awake. I was still only 3 years old, I had no clue what an Agni Kai was, who “the Swindler” was, or anything.
“I see you have been dreaming,” said Kai, stepping into my room, “dreams are powerful things, you know. Do not take them too seriously, for many are not real. However, if it is vivid and strong, remember it. It could be a glimpse of the future...”
One thing was certain: If this woman was that concerned about me, I had no choice but to love her. Of course, I had nothing against Karly and Rafai—nothing at all; but, since they were gone, I guess Kai would have to do. About that dream though—whatever I was doing felt like playing with that fire earlier. I wanted to learn more—master the art. For now though, I guess I would just have to wait to grow up…
