on the same note, After Kai finished training with Sokka, they are going to meet two more pretty major characters that I have overlooked nearly the whole time.
It is actually quite a plot twist...

It doesn't really affect the story very much, they are just more like... extra support.
for example, telling you this is much less than telling you who the real last airbender is...

exactly. here's the other spoiler:
Clazdian kills Toph and Sanaki, leaves Katara to bleed to death, and annihilates Kai, and Kai II while she is in the avatar state, thus ending the cycle forever.
Sokka then calls upon Momo, who enters the Lemur State and kills him
the deaths are not taken back though, since Kai dies as well...
