What I meant is that there's hardly any sun in the north pole so how can katara and sokka get tanned?

I was thinking the very same thing.
I believe it's a water tribe thing though.
You think it would be the Fire Nation or something...
maybe there's something that each nation does/has that makes them different...
who knows?
of course, having skin nearly the same color as Katara, I personally say that the water tribe skin color is by far the coolest.

Have you noticed how the powerful evil Firebenders are always pale?
Jeong Jeong and Iroh weren't, but Azula, Ozai and Zuko were.
Now that Zuko is good, have you noticed an increase in his tan?
But I think the reason Water tribe folks have darker skin is due to living in such cold weather.
The draker a color something is, the more heat it gains. The lighter it is, the more light and heat it reflects.
Polar bears use their white fur as camoflauge, but have black skin, to keep warm.
So, that's my view on the science of Water Tribals skin color.

Probably genetic,the other kids in the water tribe seemed to have normal skin.

well there so dark skinned becuz of the snow since snow is white it reflects the light more intensely i no this becuz i snowboard and u can get sun burnt im not even joking

It could be their race as well. Look at eskimo's and what not. They're dark skinned and all.

Orophin's argument makes sense. I think most of all really the Water Tribe is based on Inuit culture, though, and the Inuit have a similar complexion.

yes I also believe in what oorphin said,many animals do it like that,but how do you you explain that african people also have dark skin???! it wouldn't really make sense in what oorphin said.
but ok,african people have dark skin,so that they are potected from the sunshine.
