Tera:...
SANAKI LI CHAN
I was walking past the same clearing that I had a few days ago on my 14th birthday. Things both good and bad had happened here. However, I was tired. I just needed a place to relax, and I was here. I stopped using my firebending senses to locate my surroundings, and just relaxed as the world disappeared. After all, I was blind. I walked a few more feet when suddenly; I tripped over something rather large.
“Ow,” said a voice from below me, “can’t you watch where you’re—“
I recognized the voice as Tera, the supernatural. What was she doing lying in the middle of the ground? Well, actually, I had come there to do that too, so I guess she had a point. However, she had passed halfway through her sentence. Apparently she recognized me.
“Sanaki,” she said, “What are you doing here?”
“I just came here to relax,” I replied, “sorry I tripped over you. I just barely became blind again.” I told her about how I had just turned off my sense, so to speak.
“Its fine,” Tera sighed, “I guess if it really was just an accident...”
“So,” I asked, “what are you doing here?”
“I was just lying here thinking about my life again.” Tera replied, “There’s a lot to think about considering its length.”
Tera did have a point. She was 8716 years old, so I figured she was right in saying she had a long life.
“Is something wrong?” I asked, sitting next to her—well, I assumed I was next to her. Being blind and not feeling like using my heat sensing, I couldn’t really tell.
“Considering who you’re talking to, you think you’d know.” Tera replied bluntly, “but mostly it’s guilt, sorrow, depression perhaps; or maybe it’s just sadness.”
“Tera,” I said, “why are you always so sad recently? When my friends are sad, it makes me sad too. You know how my emotions play with me like that...”
“Sanaki,” said Tera, “I never asked you to become my friend, nor did I say you had to be involved with my affairs.”
I looked at Sanaki. Her bright eyes were gazing a few inches to the right of me. I put my rough hands on her face and positioned them so that, could she see, she would be staring at my face. However, this was so that I could see her face. I looked into Sanaki’s pale gold eyes. They seemed to have an unusual depth to them—they told a lot about Sanaki Li Chan, their owner. I found this surprising, as usually a blind person’s eyes were simple and not very explanatory. 8700 or so years of experience taught me that. Sanaki’s eyes though were... different. Her facial expression combined with that displayed one of true concern. Perhaps Sanaki really was concerned for me.
“Tera,” she asked, “are you okay?”
I stammered for a moment. I had been silent too long. I guess she was expecting something when I repositioned her face.
“It’s nothing,” I said, “don’t mind me. I’m just a supernatural who’s lost her mind over the long years of living.”
“To me,” said Sanaki, “you sound like a supernatural that needs some help from Kai Serenes.”
“Kai,” I exclaimed, “you know our relationship though. She hates me.”
“Kai hates no one,” said Sanaki in retaliation, “If there is any hatred at all, it is a one-way deal.”
That was one thing I always liked about Sanaki. She was never afraid to speak her mind, regardless of the situation. Of course, I had doubts that she realized that if I were the type (which I probably was); I could destroy her with little effort. Sanaki also did not seem to realize when she was in potential danger. However, I wasn’t going to attack her.
“Where is Kai,” I asked,
“She’s around,” Sanaki replied, “in fact, I hear her coming.”
That was one thing I always found mysterious about Kai. Whenever you asked Sanaki where Kai was, Sanaki would always say “she’s around”. Then, seconds later, Kai would appear. Sure enough, here she was.
“Did you need something, Tera?” she asked me,
“Sanaki said I was a supernatural who needed your help,” I replied,
“I’m not the one to judge.” She replied, “Do you want my help?”
I may not have been as close friends with Kai as I was with Sanaki, but Kai was so... so difficult to hate. She was so selfless that it almost made you want to just yell at her.
“Sure,” I muttered, “I guess I do.”
“I would tell you about a little conversation that Sanaki and I had about you, but I think I’ll let Sanaki do that. I will correct her if she’s mistaken with anything.”
“So,” I said, turning to Sanaki, “what did you say?”
“Well,” Sanaki replied, “I said that you had a resemblance to Mother Nature. To be exact, I called you a humanoid reincarnation of Mother Nature. You both are in control of everything. You can alter weather patterns, Tera. The things some people would give to have powers like yours. It’s incredible.”
“I hate them,” I replied harshly, “Do you not realize that it is because of them that I was neglected and despised?”
“Yes,” Sanaki replied to my surprise, “you told me that before I believe. Tera, I just don’t want you to be sad. It makes me just... Tera...”
Oh great. Now she was crying. I looked towards Kai with a look of asking for help, but she merely smiled at me.
I groaned and complained subtly over Sanaki’s crying, but it was no use. I had no choice but to take her and embrace her. There was something about the way Sanaki was crying that gave me no choice. I picked her up and looked at her.
“Sanaki,” I said, “I’m sorry, okay? I don’t want you to cry though. It makes me even more depressed about who I am. Just don’t cry... please.”
I paused. Tera had just said please. Usually it was the other way around. I couldn’t believe it. Tera put me down, for I had stopped crying.
“How much do you weigh?” I asked her. I don’t know why, but I felt inclined to pick Tera up and give her a hug. She was so sad all the time, and I wanted to make her feel better—at least a little.
However, her response for her weight was unusual. I may not have been able to count, but I knew what a small number and a big number were.
“I weigh 4 pounds.” Tera replied. I was speechless.
“Tera,” I said, picking her up and squeezing her; she was larger than me, but she was nearly weightless indeed. “Do you feel better yet?”
“not entirely,” she replied, “but Sanaki, you are well on your way to helping me. Thank you so much for everything.
I put Tera down, and hoped I wasn’t as red as I thought I was.
