Tera, this is a Maiko thread. And the majority of this thread is Zutarians, or whoever, bashing the hell out of a shipping I enjoy. Very little Maiko fans are standing up and defending why they even like the shipping, much less against bashing against it. Why can't I voice my two cents? Because the majority of the members who post here like the 'opposing' shipping, I should be careful? I'm up for debate as long as it remains civil and I'm not just responding to '__[insert pairing here]__ do it better and there are more of us.'

Zuko was being a jerk. He over reacted to a boy who as flirting with Mai. It hardly looked like she was flirting with him straight back. She looked just as unimpressed as she did when Zuko tried several times to impress her. Be in Mai's situation, where your boyfriend totally loses it in front of entire party and accuses you flirting with some dude. Her reaction is understandable. I don't know how many girls who would have done differently. Even when they see each other again, he throws the 'oh wheres your new boyfriend' at her again.
The thing is, every relationship has it's tiffs. They're both teenagers and teenage relationships are prone to have plenty of petty little fights here and there. You were stating that their relationship is shallow, meaning that there were nothing much to it but kissing and they were only happy when they were swapping spit. Granted, before the beach, that was one of the few interactions the creators showed them doing. The beach showed that their relationship had realistic problems. That they weren't always happy, having picnics, and making out in front of a pretty sunset. The creators gave them issues that a common in relationships; i.e. lack of communication, others butting in, others flirting with one of them, lack of passion, or far too much.
They broke up, but in the end they worked it out once those issues were discussed. IF this had been a shallow relationship, like you keep saying, they would have stayed broken up and possibly still ticked at each other. But, no, they didn't. They confronted each other about their problems; Mai's lack of emotion and Zuko finally letting it out that he angry with himself. By the next episode, there was more to their relationship than doing the tongue tango. Mai was expressing herself more than she had ever done so before and Zuko was opening up to her a bit more about his father issues.
Oh, there was a mutual crush. Sad thing about Maiko is that this was never elaborated on the show and only hinted. It was only until the comic, 'Going Home Again', in the avatar magazine, was it addressed, when Azula tells Ty Lee, "We know that Zuko and Mai had childhood crushes on each other...".
More lines:
Zuko[talking to Mai]: "You finally seem to be enjoying yourself. I've missed this side of you."
Mai: "Well, a lot has changed since the days I used to throw mud in your face. But, not everything's changed."
[First Maiko kiss]
So underneath an, some would/have said, 'unpredicted' and 'rushed' relationship lies their true history. That as children, there was more of an interaction of shy glances and fountain tricks from Azula, seen only in 'Zuko Alone'. There were more interaction, i.e. mud slinging. Not romantic, but their kids, so what can you expect from them. They were each other's childhood crushes, there was more to their interaction than glances, and they grew up with another before Zuko's banishment. And their crushes on each other had to have been obvious to those around them if even Azula and Ty Lee knew about it.
So what of their childhood crush? Well, it had to have important to mention if in a few years later, 1)this was used by Azula to lighten Zuko up and bring him back home with her, 2) they still had feelings for each other, and 3) they actually became a couple and become significant in each other's lives.
