A DRAGON'S TALE
The cool breeze and mist rush across my scarred eyes, and the scent of fire lilies is more pungent than I can remember. I brush over the dried blood on my face, that moment still so vivid in my mind. I will never forget that moment, for it changed my life forever.
It was back in that summer 2 years ago, I can see it now. The beautiful trees in full bloom, with pink buds and rosy fruit. My wife and I had just settled underneath a soft willow tree, taking a nap under the sun. Taime, my wife, was feeding our young daughter Sonkeela, whose growth we anticipated with great joy. But something felt different that day, for there was no calming breeze. Instead, the air was filled with the musty smell of smoke and ash.
In the distance an army of men approached, at least that was what it seemed. Humans, firebenders, had finally stumbled upon us. As I gazed into my wife's eyes, she read my heart. No words of love were spoken, she knew I must leave. As I ascended into the plume of smoke, I looked back at my everything, my wife and child. Little did I know that this would be the last time I would see them.
I fought my way through the blinding smoke, suffocating with each deep breath that I took. As I descended upon our home, I could smell the perfume of charred flesh, boiling blood, and see the bodies of both men and dragons lying in ruin throughout the horizon. Who could be so heartless, so vile? For centuries we lived in peace with men, never to be repaid with kindness, only blood. I began walking through the valley, looking at each lifeless body. As I turned to my right I saw my friend Harelmer, his wife and child, lying dead in the field. I knelt down beside them and began to weep, thinking of those years we spent together
12 years prior, Harelmer and I were the best of friends. Each summer we would fly south, getting a break from our parents and life. We would be gone for weeks on end, and it was then when I first stumbled upon a waterbender. She would spend each night practicing, gazing upon the moon for her strength. Only then did I begin to feel the power of the moon. It felt so calm, so gentle, yet had power equal to the sun. As I flew down toward her, the young waterbender was not scared, and welcomed me to her village.
I bonded very quickly with her, and she told me she was a Serenes, the name Serenes being a very noble family. We spent many nights together, keeping each other company as she practiced her bending. I made my first human friend that day and I’ll never forget it. Soon we bid our goodbyes and Harelmer and I flew back home. We were not prepared for what we came upon.
Bodies so numerous that we couldn't walk cluttered the valley. Our homes lied in complete ruin. As I came upon my home, I noticed my parents lying softly in the dirt, along with my brother and 2 sisters. It was a massacre. Harelmer slowly walked upon the site exclaiming that his parents were dead also. Suddenly my mother let out a huge gasp for air. I knelt beside her and gazed into her eyes. She told me that some of the dragons had escaped, and that this disaster was caused by one man. Sozin, she said, found our village and attacked us. With her last breath, she kissed me on the cheek and told me to live on. Both me and Harelmer lost our families that day and we were never the same.
Drifting out of my memory, I looked upon his wife and child and was filled with grief. Suddenly I noticed that I wasn't alone. A swift combination of flames were bellowing at my body. As I evaded them, I noticed that I was completely surrounded. As I fought back, a man jumped on top of me and grabbed me by the throat. As I tossed him around, he drew out his sword. I thrust him in the air, but as he came down, he shot a quick fireball at me and sliced his sword across my eyes. I could taste the blood that poured quickly from my wound. The pain was unbearable.
Then out of the corner of my eye, I saw my wife Taime swoop down from the smoke, feverishly throwing all of her fire power at them. Then I saw the man who had wounded me re-position himself, and as I watched, he shot a bolt of lightning at my wife, striking her down from the air. She fell quickly and landed hard on the ground. I was overcome with an emotional rage, and unleashed the largest amounts of fire I have ever produced. I relentlessly attacked, using my tail to shield me, for they knew I was wounded. As I charged forward, they frantically stumbled backwards and began to run. I heard them call for the man near my wife, Prince Ozai, to retreat. As they fled I didn't follow, because my pain began to overcome me.
I flew to my wife and stared helplessly at her body. My life, my home, was in ruin. I feared the worst, that my daughter Sonkeela had received the same fate. As I cried next to her, blood and tears, my eyes turned white and the vision of her faded away.
so tell me what you think
