Tera: hi again, y'all...
earlier today... in the early hours of the morning... Sanaki and I had a little talk.
it kinda unveils my true colors and such...
so yeah. please forgive my previously terrible reputation.
TERA'S 8717th BIRTHDAY
I was walking along, feeling slightly depressed, and a little confused. For me though, this was normal, even on my birthday. However, I saw something that cheered me up. I saw Sanaki in front of me in a clearing, dancing joyfully to a song that she was singing. She was wearing the dress that I had made her a few weeks previous, and she looked very elegant in it. She had such a cute little voice, and she was a good singer. Her dancing skills were even better. She was fast most of the time, but this time she was skipping around happily, as if she did not have a care in the world. I watched as she danced away. She was not using her heat detection sense, because she passed right by me without noticing. She was dancing blindly. Her song was cute too.
I watched her dance, and had a surge of guilt when I saw the left side of her neck—the gash that was there was bleeding again. I had given her that scar, and because it was given by a supernatural, there was nothing that could be done to remove it—or so I thought.
I had the courtesy to wait until Sanaki paused before I appeared and made myself known.
“Tera,” she exclaimed, “What are you doing here?”
This was a curious question, for Sanaki did not mind my presence.
“I was just thinking,” I replied, “a wise man told me you knew a lot about interpreting names. What do you know?”
“I’m no expert,” Sanaki replied, “I’m just a little kid. You’re thousands of years old (whatever that is). You’re much wiser than I am.”
“Not even close,” I replied, “Sanaki, you’re a brilliant child. I envy that.”
Sanaki blushed. I smiled weakly.
“What’s your full name again?” she asked me,
“Tera Mezhiak Altina,” I replied, “I heard you know what it means. What do you think of the name?”
“Well,” Sanaki replied, “the name Tera has always reminded me of a strong-willed person. It is a name that I would only give to someone with a resolute stance and unwavering friendship. It is also a name of mystery—of constant change... that’s what I think it means.”
“You got all that out of my first name alone?” I gaped, “tell me about my other names—please.”
“Hmm,” Sanaki muttered, “Mezhiak—it seems like a powerful name; and yet, one that would contain said power rather than use it for selfish reasons. It’s got strength to it, Tera. I’m confident in my response.”
Sanaki paused for a moment.
“And then there’s your last name;” she continues, “Tera, I’ve always loved your last name. It’s so beautiful. Altina is my middle name as well. I was surprised to learn we shared that name.”
I said nothing. Sanaki continued.
“Even if it wasn’t my name, I’d still say it was one of the most beautiful names I have ever heard. If I have a child, I am going to name her Altina. I love that name so much. Tera, your last name is so beautiful. It has a pure touch to it—as if it is surrounded by evil and malice. It is like a beacon—a source of warmth in a cold and hostile world—never wavering from its origin.”
“So,” I said, “do you think that a name reflects a person?”
“I do.” Sanaki replied, “Tera, I may have not been that happy with your actions when we first met, but from that time, I sensed that there was good in you. I sensed that your mind had been poisoned. That is why I have been so forgiving. I knew that if I could soften your heart, that you would be able to overcome the dominating evil that resided within you. I knew that you were originally a good person. Your real countenance shone from behind all that hate and lack of feeling.”
Sanaki paused again.
“Tera,” she asked me, “now I have a question for you.”
“Fire away,” I replied,
“Well,” Sanaki said, “Kai once told me that although I could not see with my eyes, that I could see things that no one else could. What does that mean? Is it bad?”
“Sanaki,” I replied, “you demonstrated your ability of extra sight just now. You saw the good that was in me. No one, not even Kai, saw it as clearly as you did. You have an incredible talent. You’re a gifted child, Sanaki.”
“What do you mean?” Sanaki asked back,
“Sanaki,” I replied, “you have done more for me than I could ever repay you for. I almost feel unworthy to be in your presence.”
“But,” Sanaki stammered, “I’m just a little blind girl. How could I do more than a supernatural like you?”
“Because you have done things I could not.” I replied, “You forgave me for all of the terrible things I’ve done for you—even for that scar, which is permanent damage. I could never forgive a person for things like that. I’m just not that nice. Sanaki, you are an amazing child. I can detect your traits—you have a very kind and loving heart. You have a beautiful name to match the beautiful little girl—to match that beautiful little girl’s soul. It was your soul that called out to mine—you reminded me that I was not a heartless freak. You almost make me feel human, and to me that... that means a lot.”
Sanaki reached out and embraced me.
“Tera,” she said, “I’m sorry you’re sad. Today is your birthday. You should feel happy. You may have hurt me on my birthday, but all in all, I actually had a very good day that day, despite everything. Oh, and I’m glad your ankles are better.”
I smiled.
“Thank you Sanaki,” I told her, embracing her. I actually was leaning on her, but since I only weighted 4 pounds, it made little difference to her. I was thankful for my negligible weight. I could feel a burst of emotion coming on, and I knew exactly what type of emotion it was. This time however, I did nothing to try and stop it. I pushed Sanaki down and we rolled together in a heap. We were both laughing and crying at the same time. I don’t know when Sanaki started crying, but she was joining right along with me. Sanaki had a tendency to cry with other people. she was always a good choice for someone to lean on—in my case, even literally. Still, it is something I would not recommend anyone else trying, for she is a small girl, and probably would get crushed.
“Sanaki,” I told her, “you are growing into a very beautiful, graceful, dignified, and mature young woman. The Serenes Family raised you well—very well.”
Sanaki stopped.
“Thank you.” She said, and we found ourselves embracing each other again. After we let go a few seconds later, we both lied down on the ground and gazed upward—well, I did. Sanaki just shrugged it off.
“You’ve seen nothing once,” she said, “You’ve seen it a million times. Don’t worry about me, Tera. I’ll be okay. I like doing nearly anything when I’m with one of my best friends.”
“I’m... I’m one of your best friends?” I exclaimed,
“Of course,” Sanaki replied, “oh, and thanks for the dress. I love it.”
“You’re welcome. I replied,
“Oh,” she added, “and happy birthday again. I hope you have a happy evening tonight.”
“thank you Sanaki,” I replied, “that really means a lot to me, even if I’ve gone through 8716—now 8717 of them.”
Sanaki giggled. After that though, I remained silent. I began quietly crying, but I didn’t want Sanaki to hear me. I wanted the both of us to happily enjoy this moment, just lying on our backs, facing the sky. Sanaki’s bright red dress complemented the bright green grass and the vivid blue sky. I almost wished Sanaki was not blind, but I knew she didn’t mind her blindness—in fact she said she liked it. Sanaki had so many respectable traits. I knew that she was going to be one of the finest women the world had ever had. She was already a very fine young woman, and I respected her for that. Right now, however, I only wished that this moment could last forever...
