Is your character a Mary Sue?

Ordinary people, exactly! Ordinary = not awesome. They need some sue-ishness if they're gonne be main characters, otherwise they're useless.

well they have awesomeness, but awesomeness is sort of expected when there's a plausible reason for it.

and you know how I have a strong hatred for overpowered young characters... that's why any time I do I always give them glaring weaknesses.

well, they ARE just normal people, that's the thing.
they just happened to meet people who were part of the Avatar Guard ('coz Royota and Koara were already members, and Zakura was too obviously)

so far though Katara's not doing too bad though.

well, there are a couple of powerful younglings in my series, but they're not the main characters.
(Katara got a 23 BTW)

but in order to avoid that problem, I just make my main characters older, and thus more years of experience under their belts.

and of course, if you recall, both Katara and Sanaki both have spent most of their lives bending, not doing very much else.
