The Long Awaited Confession: A Tokka Story
Part 1
Premise:
Four weeks have passed since the entire gang last saw each other in Iroh’s tea shop The Jasmine Dragon. Now most of the team has left Ba Sing Se and departured to various locations in the world. Firelord Zuko and Mai returned to the Fire Nation capital to begin running the new, and rejuvenated country. Avatar Aang and Katara took Appa and Momo to revisit the Southern Water Tribe where their friends and family await them. Only three members of the team stayed behind and their reasons for doing such remain unknown. We pick up with Sokka who’s walking through the lower ring streets, and is coming back from the city’s outer wall.
Sokka- “I can’t believe that just happened.”
He said quietly to himself.
Sokka- “HOW could I let that happen?”
He said, this time in a more level tone.
Sokka- “I mean I know we live pretty far apart and all but it still doesn’t make sense.”
He stopped in his tracks, eyes starring at the ground, watching the movement of the city continue around him. He searched for answers, he needed answers, he needed advice. He started walking again, slowly continuing his way into the city.
Sokka- “I need to talk to someone about this but who?” “Aang and Katara are back home at the South Pole, Zuko and Mai are back in the Fire Nation, and I don’t even know where Toph is.” “She’s probably back in her home town with her parents.”
He put his hand to his face and began scratching his chin.
Sokka- “Who else is there?”
He thought to himself for awhile until it finally hit him and with it he let out a silent gasp.
Sokka- “Duh, of course”
He said while laughing at himself. He then quickly turned his slow walk into a well-paced stride and began his way toward the upper ring.
After walking for what seemed like hours he had finally reached his destination. He stood at the lower stairway of The Jasmine Dragon clasping his chest, attempting to catch his breath. It was bad enough that he had to walk all the way to the upper ring but it was also in the middle of the day so the heat was also a factor. He soon started breathing softly again and began the climb up the stairs and into the front entrance of the infamous tea shop. He walked through the front entrance he was surprised to see the shop was completely empty, except for one costumer in the back corner. He turned away from the lone costumer and began searching for Iroh. He hadn’t looked but for a few seconds before he was interrupted by the person in the corner.
Toph- “Snoozles?? Is that you?”
He was caught completely of guard in realization of who the costumer was and fell to the ground in a loud, jumbled, crash. Toph flinched as she heard this and got out of her seat and walked toward Sokka in his crumbled position. Once there she leaned over him with a huge grin on her face which then turned into a soft laugh.
Toph- “Sorry Snoozles, didn’t mean to scare you.”
He quickly gathered himself up and once he was back on his feet, brushed himself off.
Sokka- “I wasn’t scared.” You just caught me off guard that’s all.” He said in a seemingly annoyed tone.
Toph- “Ok, whatever.” She said with the grin still laid across her face. “So what are you doing here anyway Snoozles?” “Didn’t you go back home with the two lovebirds?”
Before answering he grabbed a seat at a nearby table, followed shortly by Toph.
Sokka- “No I stayed behind”
Toph- “Mind me asking why?”
He shortly paused at the question, unsure if he wanted to answer it.
Sokka- “I wanted to stay in the city with Suki for a few weeks before she and the other Kyoshi warriors headed back to their home island.” “I wasn’t sure how long it would be before we saw each other again so I wanted to get in as much time as possible.”
His head lowered and he starred blankly at the wooden table in front of him.
Toph- “Well I’m sure you’ll see her again before you know it.”
Sokka- “That’s kind of the reason I’m here.” “I wanted to talk to Iroh about it. Do you know where he is?”
Toph- “He’s not here today”
Sokka- “What? Why not?”
He asked completely surprised.
Toph- “He said he wanted to do some refurbishing in the shop this week.” He’s been shopping in the city all day.”
Sokka- “Oh”
He said softly while lowering his head again. Toph heard the tone in his voice and knew he was disappointed in her answer.
Toph- “You seem really depressed Snoozles.”
Sokka- “Yeah, I guess I am a little.” He said again softly
Toph- “I guess you really wanted to talk to Iroh huh?”
Sokka- “Yeah”
Silence fell between the two as both sat there quietly not knowing what to say. Toph was the first to say something and to break the silence.
Toph- “You know if you really wanted to talk that bad, I’m here.” “And I’m a pretty good listener.” She said while chuckling
Sokka- “No that’s ok.” “Thanks anyway though.”
Silence once again fell upon the room only this time it lasted much longer. But in this silence, thoughts were racing through Toph’s mind. What was he so depressed about, why did he only want to talk to Iroh about it and not me. There has to be some way I can help.
She put her hand on top of the table and began tapping two of her fingers against it.
Toph- “Well if you don’t want to talk about it with me, then at least let me help you take whatever it is off your mind.”
Sokka raised his head and starred at her, pondering on what she’d said.
Sokka- “Ummm ok.” “And how do you plan to do that exactly?” He asked still very puzzled.
Toph- Let’s go out into the city tonight and have some fun, you know like back in the good old days.”
Sokka- “You mean the good old days when you scammed countless people out of a bunch of money, got into a huge fight with my sister, got captured by the Fire Nation who put you in jail, which then nearly got us all blown up by Combustion Man?”
Toph- “Those are the ones.” She said with a huge smile on her face.
He thought about it to himself for moment. Those were quite the days, and they were pretty fun I guess. Who knows maybe this is what I need for now. At least until Iroh gets back.
Sokka- “Ok Toph, you’re on.” “One night of fun in Ba Sing Se coming up.”
They both got up out of their seats and walked away from the table and to the front entrance of the shop.
Toph- “Excellent, meet me here at the front entrance in one hour.” “Got it Snoozles?” she asked sternly while poking his chest with her finger.
Sokka- “I got it, I got it.” “I’ll be here.”
Toph- “You better be.” She said with a smile on her face.
He began walking down the stairs, heading back to the apartment he had been staying in the last few weeks. Maybe this is what I need right now, as he began feeling anxious, and was looking forward to his night with Toph. He looked back at the shop where Toph was still standing in the doorway.
Toph- “See you in an hour Snoozles.” She shouted at him and then walked back inside the shop.
He continued walking. Yeah, definitely what I need.
