Tera: this is a dark story... a story that Sanaki herself doesn't even know but that I feel must be shared...
I... jst... never mind...
CHAPTER 9
Sanaki’s story was cute in my opinion, but I, (Tera) being a supernatural that was able to recall moments in time, knew much more about her original past than she did. I was greatly disturbed by what I learned. Her parents were named Orzon and Zeruda. They were part of a long line of conspirators and assassins who were cruel and heartless. However, their family had close ties with the royal family, having slowly seeped up the ranks over time. They had no last name it turned out, so Sanaki was able to validly keep the name Li Chan. They were notorious for being sinister folks who were seductively attractive. They were cruel and merciless, but it explained where Sanaki and Mikaya got their good looks from. The events that followed though broke my heart. It was just after they had given birth to the twins. They were but a day or two old.
“So,” Zeruda muttered, “twins, huh?”
“What choice did we have in the matter?” Orzon replied,
“It’s not that,” Zeruda objected, “it’s just—look at them.
“I noticed,” Orzon replied, “I could sense it after they were born. They seem really weak.”
“They are weak.” Zeruda declared. This might have been true, but they were just babies, and being twins, they were naturally smaller than normal. They grew up to be tiny girls, (Mikaya hit 5 feet when she was 16; Sanaki did when she was 17) but averaged out in their adult years.
“I am aware they are weak,” said Orzon, “I don’t think we should even go through the trouble of raising them.”
“Indeed,” said Zeruda, “if they are too weak to carry on our heritage, then what is their purpose?”
“Their purpose,” Orzon exclaimed, “nothing; nothing at all. We need to get rid of them as soon as possible.”
“by doing what,” Zeruda asked, “throwing them out in the street; if word gets out that we killed two children, especially our own, we’ll get strung up here and now.”
“If word gets out about anything our family has been doing,” said Orzon, “we’ll be strung up here and now.”
“Then what do we do?” Zeruda inquired, “Do you want to be stuck here with the trouble of trying to raise these children?”
“Considering how calm and serene they are,” said Orzon, “I might have said so. However, as they have no good use, and are so small...”
This made me, Tera, so angry to hear this. I knew they couldn’t hear me (I had gone back as if into a memory) but I yelled.
“You’re holding a future swordmaster and one of the greatest firebenders ever to live!” I roared, “How dare you say they have no use!”
Both Mikaya and Sanaki were firebenders, and they both would eventually become skilled with swordplay.
“Look exactly how small they are,” said Zeruda to Orzon. My words had been ignored, but I expected that. This was a past event, and I had not been there.
“Hmm,” she muttered, “this one has brighter eyes than the other one. Her eyes are too pale. Do you think...?
Zeruda held out her finger to the older girl, and she stuck out a tiny hand to reach out for it. This one I could tell was Mikaya, for this one was not blind. She was slightly larger than Sanaki, but not by much. Either way, both girls were really tiny, weighing probably only about as much as I did—4 pounds. I saw Zeruda do the same thing with Sanaki, except Sanaki didn’t respond.
“What,” Zeruda exclaimed, “is she blind or something?”
“There is only one way to find out,” Orzon replied, making a fireball in his hand. Sanaki’s eyes were wide open like her sisters, and were pale gold. He put the fireball close to Sanaki’s face, so that the light was bright enough to make normal people cover their eyes. Sanaki’s eyes, however, remained wide open. In fact, she seemed almost entranced by the flames. This was proof that Sanaki was indeed born blind.
“So she really is blind then,” Zeruda muttered, “it was as I predicted. I knew there was something about those pale eyes...”
“We must get rid of her at once.” Said Orzon, “Perhaps then we might be able to toughen up the other one;”
“Not even that,” said Zeruda, “this blind one though... ugh... we need her out of here now.”
“Then let us get rid of her,” said Orzon, “and save us the trouble and get rid of the other one as well.”
“indeed,” said Zeruda,” we just need to make it look like an accident.”
“Oh we will,” said Orzon, and nasty smirks crept over both their faces, “we certainly will.”
I was infuriated. However, a few days passed, and then something happened that made me feel relieved. They had placed Sanaki in a basket by the roadside and had returned to their home, when they were attacked. Somehow word of their family’s deeds had leaked, and now they were paying for it with death. Within an hour, the building was demolished, and Orzon and Zeruda were slain. Mikaya was still in what left of the building, where I saw her get was picked up by a man now known as Zihark Serenes. Sanaki on the other hand, was picked up by a wandering waterbender known as Kai Serenes. This was where the story of Sanaki actually began. It began as something that could have potentially made these two beautiful, innocent little girls become evil, treacherous monsters. One thing I do know is that a vein of treachery will always run in that family, and so I constantly advise the girls to behave well. I do not want them by any means to go down the path that their family did. I have not told them about this, and don’t plan to. If they ever found out, it would break their little hearts.
