either she doesn't like to admit it or just doesn't realize it, but Zakura's had a hard life.

well, I mean, most of the time when people have a really hard life, it shows (like with Kimiko or Katara)
Zakura on the other hand, has always been a really "tough girl" and so to have her showing too many signs of having a hard life would sort of break her character...
or, that's what I think at least.
