This may seem like a pointless thread to you! But i think it's pretty important! What about combined elements like sand (well not really combined, i just couldn't think of a word!) but sand is like earth... but its not earth... know what i mean. And what about Steam it's like heated up water so it has a connection with water and fire. But then steam is also a gas so it has a connection with air!

And what about Steam it's like heated up water so it has a connection with water and fire. But then steam is also a gas so it has a connection with air! In the ATLA universe, they treat sand AS earth from what we've seen (no other bender type can bend sand). Can't blame them either. Sand isn't really a 'combined' element in my opinion, but the Earthbending technique for sand has to be different because of the quality of sand. Earthbenders probably had to use similar movements like Waterbenders or Airbenders because of how "fluid" and "light" sand is. Now as for steam, I'm thinking that Sozin used a similar method related to redirecting Lightning, which was influenced by the redirection methods of the Waterbenders. Firebenders are allowed to manipulate heat anyways, so this probably wasn't a big deal for Sozin to move some of the steam out of the volcano. Overall, my point is that 'combined elements' are more like 'combined bending techniques.' The Avatar, in a literal sense, can 'combine elements;' and using 'combined techniques' like sand and steam bending will probably benefit to the Avatar's abilities.

Good idea, but I don't think sand is really a combined element. It is just a type of bending someone made up.
