I have been thinking for a while ... as lightning and metal are the higher elements for fire and earth but air and water we don't know... but all i know is sand is a form of earth but... toph couldn't see so well in the desert since it was all loose earth so I figured that must be earth' lower element. what would air, water and fire's lower elements? post your ideas here.

good theory, but Toph could still bend sand just as good as any other earth

Maybe lava would be fire's. I don't know, though.

Air was shown in 203 Chapter 03: Return to Omashu, when Aang blew air so cold it frosted over the chain then released the King down the Mail Delivery system.
Water was shown in many episodes that it has ability to work with snow. This was shown in 103 Chapter 03: The Southern Air Temple. Water has the ability to Freeze also. Shown in 307 Chapter 07: The Runaway. Water can also be pulled from the inside of a person out, as shown in 102 Chapter 02: The Avatar Returns.

Why would it be called "lower?" Sandbending isn't necessarily weaker than other forms of earthbending. It depends on how the user utilizes their skills. I don't even think there are such things as "lower" elements nor "higher." All these bending abilities really are just sub-skills, like metal, lightning, and blood bending. Sand bending is just another form of these. Water benders can also heal themselves and can also bend plants, as another skill that comes with waterbending.
Toph couldn't "see" very well when walking on sand because sand is "liquidy" and not that stable and still compared to solid ground, which disrupts the vibrations that her feet can feel.

Metal-Bender X7 I agree so I'm going to call them sub-skills. ^_^
Firebending sub-skills: Steam/embers/lava Waterbending sub-skills: Snow/steam/swamp water/clouds Airbending sub-skills: Ummm.... Steam?/clouds/dust Earthbending sub-skills: Sand/mud/lava, but definately not steam, unless its dusty steam.... Can steam be dusty/dirty? -ponders-
I think the "lower skills" or sub-skills are just bending techniques that can be used in two or more elements, in other words they intermingle.

I didn't say she couldn't bend the earth and she couldn't bend it any normal way since the earth was ''liquidy'' and if you watch the library episode you see she can't aim at the sand benders. because the sand can't hold itself ''still'' like normal earth... but i wonder, as Azula is a prodigy of fire bending she could discover new ways of fire bending as seen on THE BOILING ROCK PT. 2 she can fly with fire bending, and Toph who is also a earth bendng prodigy is the only person who can bend metal... could there be other bendables?

Fire- would be heat in general i think, lava would employ additional power over the element because of its intensity, so i think that heat is/would be fires lower element.
Earth- sand.
Water- i think waters lower element is mist, meaning that water probably utilizes its lower element more than any other bending nation.
Air- this may sound a bit crazy, but i think air is its own lower element, it is a minute change in tiny particles of space, so airbenders in theory are really weak "space" benders. i don't mean space as in outer space, but more as in the space time continuam kind of way. due to the airbender mentality, they are somehow linked to all of space and time and their ability to bend air is thier slight control over the tiny particles in the air itself that they are moving, not just the air itself. according to this theory however, by the aribenders being able to control all particles in the air, they could all potentially bend small amounts of any element.
think on it.

yeah... ya make sense but, i still don't think air would be a lower element or else they would have been dominated a long time ago. but it can happen with air bending other elements.

but she still can bend sand, their are no higher or lower elements, they are just other forms, end of story

That sounds about right, kingstick07.
There are no "lower" or "higher" forms.
There are rarer forms, though.
