no rat is un raton and escuela means school Es verdad que "raton" significa "rat" en ingles, pero "pasar el rato" es una expresion. Asi, waterbendinggurl tenia razon. Translation: It's true that "raton" means "rat" in english, but "pasar el rato" is an expression [that spanish speakers use...hence the joke 112233445566778899 was trying to tell . English speakers would guess it meant "pass the rat"]. So, waterbedinggurl is right. Y para contestar su pregunta, tengo diecinueve anos y estoy en universidad.

I'm in the mood to give a Spanish lesson at the moment. Since this is superaang's page, I'd like to thank him for saying I could do this...Muchos Gracias. Now without further ado, let's start with the basics...
The gender of nouns: In English we distinguish gender by using an entirely different word. For example...we don't say boya and boyo to distinguish boy and girl....we simply say "he" "she", "boy" "girl", "grandmother" "grandfather" etc. etc.
In Spanish that's different. To tell the difference between male and female in a sentence, they can 1) change the ending
Ex) el gato (gato means cat in spanish) la gata (gata also means cat, but this time the person would be talking about a female cat)
So you can add "a" or "o" to the word to make it masculine (for male objects) or feminine (for female objects).
The part "el" and "la" are called articles. These articles also tell the difference between masculine and feminine words and are very important in a sentence. You have to use the right article...
Think of "el" and "la" as the word "the" in English...So el gato, really means "the cat (boy)", and la gata really means "the cat (girl)"
Easy right? What I really like about Spanish is that it is really similar to English as you'll later find out with certain words...but the "article" lesson isn't done yet..., it gets a tad bit more complicated, but you'll get the hang of it with practice.
In the meantime here are some more masculine and feminine nouns to remember: el niño/la niña (the boy/the girl) el chico/la chica (also means the boy/the girl) la abuela/el abuelo (the gradmother/the grandfather)
Now this is more similar to English...in that they have a different word for "mother" and "father"
el padre(the father...notice that it still has "el" in front of it because it refers to a guy)
la madre(the mother...notice that it still has a "la" in front of it because it refers to a woman)
Okay, more on articles when I get in the mood to continue this lección (lesson)...

I learnt some spanish at my old school, I wasn't exactly the best at it though. But I think if I found myself in a spanish speaking country, with no memory how I got there, I could fumble my way through.

sakuraangelina, your lesson looks just like one of my school ( so stupid to have long boring spanish lessons in a spanish speaking country ). other thing about spanish is that all vocal always the same sound ( a always sounds as an a and e always sounds as an e ) ''h'' doesn't has a sound except in ''ch'' ''ll'' sounds like a y in the word yawn for example ''ñ'' sounds like gn in french
an grammar and verbs are by far more easy in english
