I think she loses the loopies in book 3 because it would be a dead giveaway that she was water tribe and not fire nation.

it's a genuine inuit hairstyle. the creators at first wanted to do her hair like the loopies except they weren't tied back. they thought that they would move around too much and it would be hard to animate, so they tied them back. it turned out to be a genuine inuit hairstyle.

the loopies, as said, are a part of the Water Tribe. and in book 3 she changes the loopies to some thing that i don't know the name of, looks like big ''hot dogs'' until DoBS she returns to the old style whit a twist, in book 1 and 2 she a small ''ball'' at the back of her head and in book 3 she has loosened that nob and let her hair out, you get the idea

Katara's hair rocks. even when someone sticks a bomb in there and detonates it. you get something like this... that's probably why she looks pissed lol) but still, the loopies are ownage. ~Katara~

"I Like your hair loopies!" - Chibi Haru
Lol. To me, it seems like hair is one of the main points of the show...

exactly. those loopies are not only a trademark of the water tribe, but also like a charm...
I mean, it's an old legend...
"Those who bear the loopies are automatically bestowed open with good looks..." which might explain why Katara get shipped with everything and everyone... including me. *grins*
