I think that he's a member, but he has to prove himself to show the other members of th WL that he's a friend and didn't just steal the lotus tile.
like tell who gave it to him...
his intentions...
what side he's on...
etc...etc...

I'd assume that the White Lotus is made up of 'good guys.'
I don't think Sokka is a member of the White Lotus. I think the tile was just given to him for a clue of what group Master Piandao belongs to, obviously the White Lotus. Sokka is already helping Aang, and probably won't betray the gaang and join anatagonists (never!!!).
But when worse comes to worse, the White Lotus will have Sokka's back. Maybe when Sokka is older, or more informed of the White Lotus, then he'll be a member.
Overall, I think Sokka doesn't have to be a member, or not yet, and the White Lotus is potential backup and good advisers (secretly).

Now that i've seen it, i belive that sokka isn't in the group or is ever going to be. I do belive that the white lotus is made up of people who are loyal to the old fire nation, kinda like the fire sages are suposed to be. Piandao, sokka's master, is probably in the WHite Lotus. The tile was probably just a gift in case sokka meets him again

i agree sokka is not a member of the white lotus...i think that he was given the pi sho tile as a safe haven if he should ever be in trouble....i bet that we will see the white lotus very soon...

no actually the white lotus is a secret secity which involves people from each of the different nations coming together to form a group sort like resistence agenst the fire lord or as he called himeself the phoenix king.
