"ok. so umm are you ready avatar?"
"oh er yeah. and zuko, if you like you can call me aang."
"oops sorry. it's just i was so used to treating you like the ememy before. well i'm still adjusting."
Zuko prepared his stance. before aang could ready himself a swirling blaze of fire knocked him off his feet. he proppelled himself backwards to avoid the flames, not realising how close to the cliff he was
"wooa!" he yelled, loosing his balance. but before zuko could even take in properly what had happened, appa swooped in and caught him barely inches away from the ridge.
katara heard the comotion and came running, opening her flask of water. ready to fight.
"what's going on? what do you think you're doing practising out in the open where there's a great drop on one side?! oh and i suppose it was your idea that aang be on that dangerous side? well? aren't you going to answer?"
"well" zuko began. "now that you've given me chance to breathe, yes i'll answer."with these words came just the smallest hint of malice. at this zuko saw her eyes glisten. was she tearing up? he suddenly felt awful.
"oh i- i'm sorry. i didn't mean to- i shouldn't have started his training out here. please don't- don't cry." at the word 'cry' she suddenly recomposed herself.
"cry? what are you talking about?" turning, so that she was now fully facing zuko she wiped her eyes, then she gave him a glare that was crystal clear. she didn't want aang to know she had been crying for him.
later, zuko went to see her. as he closed her bedroom door behind him it creeked and she jumped.
"it's ok it's ok! it's just me. um look i wanted to apolagise for-"
"no" she cut in "I want to apolagise. i'm sorry. i shouldn't have ranted at you like that. and i'm sorry for what i said that first day. i see now that you really have changed. but there's something i need to know." she paused. "what happened in ba sing sei? we never finnished our conversation. and next thing i knew you were fighting allongside azula." zuko didn't know what to say.
she saw his uncomfort and softened her gaze and voice.
"well what i mean is. ok. umm i have 3 questions. firstly, you told me when we were imprisoned together that the fire nation took your mother away. please, tell me more." she looked at him quizicaly.
"ok." he began "when i was ten azula and i sneeked into one of the fire lord and my father's meetings. he asked the fire lord to make him the next in line to the throne. well the fire lord was more than angry. he was furious. and i thought i'd been seen so i ran, all the way back to my room. later azula came and told me that the fire lord, my own grandfather, had told my father that he had to kill me." katara's eyes were so beautiful, he found himself wondering whether she would ever look at him like that again.
"i was scared and confused but my mother assured me that nothing like that would ever happen. that night she came and woke me up. she told me that she had to go, but that it was best for me to stay. she said that i should never let my dreams go. that they would never dissapear as long as i kept believing in them." he saw her eyes glisten, was she tearing up? no it must have been the light. she looked like an angel.
"that was so brave of her. did you ever see her again?"
"no"
"oh i'm so sorry"
"no it's ok" he hadn't explained all. "i think she's still out there. some where. i know she can't be... gone."
she smiled.
"um second. what happened in ba sing sei? we were interrupted and next thing you were with azula and.. and... well, what happened?"
the words cut zuko like a knife. but he had to answer, and he knew even if he had wanted to lie about what had happened, he couldn't have. not to her.
"well when you left azula came. and she convinced me that.. that my only path to regain my honour was with her, in killing the avatar." even his own words were slicing into him.
"oh" her crystal blue eyes dropped to the floor. but she lifted them again and took a deep breath.
"and um, would you have said yes?"
zuko's heart skipped a beat. he didn't know what she ment but he had a lump in his throat that was making it hard to breathe.
he dropped his eyes it was near impossible to look at her.
"w-what do you mean?" he felt the blood rushing to his face, he could tell he was going red.
katara ducked her head down under zuko's and made eye contact. she smiled.
"when we were together in prison i offered to try and heal your scar." she held the bottom of his chin and slowly lifted his head. as their eyes met she smiled. "there. now we can see each other. so?"
katara looked into zuko's eyes and saw not anger and rage, which she was so used to seeing in his eyes, but sorrow and regret. it was entrancing, and she found herself leaning in towards him.
zuko saw katara's smile, so charming, so exquisit. slowly he realised that he was leaning towards her, for no reason at all.
but he'd had enough of listening to reason.
closer. until they kissed. XXXX
