OK, I know there has been a lot of debate about the child airbenders, and i hope this answers most of your questions.
Long ago there were four great leaders, Each learned a great ability. Bending. Soon, these great leaders had children, which in the end meant a lot of marrying, and child birth, so that about half an entire nation would be benders. The airbending race was made by one of those great leaders. He taught his children to watch the great sky bison that came to his temples. His children had children, but it was all made in the temples. The great man brought his nation there, were the land prospered. Soon, the non benders died out because of the constant marrying with benders, so soon it was all just air nomads. This leader, in his old age, realized that his nation could be wiped out in a single blow because of the fact that they were all in one temple. He made three other temples, were he put some of his nation. Soon, he died, the first airbender, and the nation grew. Many years passed when an airbender thought of something. He constantly watched the bison, intrigued by there grace and beauty, but most of all there ability to fly. Soon he sculpted the glider. With this invention, he taught every monk how to fly. Soon, the airbenders put tattoos on the airbenders that have mastered the art, meaning they are free to fly like the bison.
