Anyways, here's the story--well, the prologue at least...
PROLOGUE
Sanaki found Kai outside of their home one night. She was simply gazing up at the moon, which at the time was full. Sanaki, being
blind, was unable to see what she was staring at, but she knew that Kai was looking towards the heavens.
“What are you looking at?” Sanaki asked, wanting to verify her theory,
“I’m just looking at the moon, Sanaki,” Kai replied, “you should go to sleep, especially since you like the morning better.”
Sanaki had just turned 14 years old. She was a firebender of unnatural speed and talent. Ever since she was 9, Sanaki Li Chan had been fighting grown men and skills firebending warriors at their own game. Sanaki’s incredible speed had made her the undefeated champion for these last 5 years.
Sanaki was small and weak, unable to take very many hits without being knocked out or, if enough hits were landed on her, killed. Although 14, Sanaki was only 4’ 7” and only weighed in at 79 pounds. Kai Serenes, who acted as Sanaki’s mother-figure, was possibly a little overprotective of Sanaki.
The most interesting thing about Sanaki though, was not her incredible firebending skill. The most peculiar thing about Sanaki Li Chan was that she was completely blind. She had been born blind, but this did not stop her at all from acting normally. Sanaki had such a way with firebending that using that ability, she sort of gained a 6th sense. Sanaki could detect even the slightest difference in heat from her surroundings. For her, this was seeing: shaping objects by detecting the heat levels, and dealing with the surroundings appropriately. The downside was if it was cold or Sanaki’s body was cold, the sense would be impaired, and Sanaki would be rendered more blind than she usually was. Nevertheless, since these two lived in the Fire Nation, finding heat was not difficult. Besides, when Sanaki got cold, she would surround her body with flames to heat it up.
Kai on the other hand, was a much different character than Sanaki was. Kai was a waterbender. Like Sanaki though, she went barefoot. This was actually their village’s way of recognizing them. Some earthbenders went barefoot, but seldom, if ever, did a firebender or a waterbender go barefoot. Sanaki had never worn shoes in her life. Kai’s story of why she goes barefoot is a little longer. Kai was a waterbender with talents unheard of. It was because of her fame that Sanaki became popular as well. However, the surprising thing was, although Sanaki promoted herself because it was her nature to be c0cky, Kai almost would demote herself. Kai was abnormally selfless.
Never once had this 36-year-old woman cared for herself before worrying about others. Kai became famous then, not because of self-promotion (that’s not a bad thing), but because of what she did. When she saw someone in need, she would d whatever it took to help them. Kai’s waterbending skills were abnormal as well. She could bloodbend at will, regardless of the time of month, and she had such incredible healing powers that she could actually bring people back to life if certain conditions were met. Anything that involved water in any way, Kai was able to do. She was that good at what she did.
Additionally, although Sanaki was still young and had things to learn, Sanaki had mastered the art of firebending. She was now starting to touch the advanced skills, like blue fire or lightning. Kai had made her wait until her 14th birthday, because she thought it would be dangerous. Kai, being Sanaki’s mother-figure, cared everything for Sanaki, and would be devastated should Sanaki ever die.
“I couldn’t sleep,” said Sanaki, “I knew where to find you, and so I sensed you out. I’m not completely blind, you know. I can still firebend at night”
Sanaki was proud of being blind. She really hated it when people treated her lower or different because she was blind. The reason she had trained so hard with her firebending skills was to prove that she was not a helpless little blind girl, but that anything the grown men could do, this little girl could do better. Some of Sanaki’s deeds though, were less than legal. Sanaki was a good con artist because of her blindness. She had since earned the name “The Swindler” and had a huge bounty on her head.
However, everyone knew where they were and where they lived. The problem was that no one could get near enough to Sanaki and try to take her without Kai attacking. Sanaki therefore, had a better idea. She challenges everyone who wants to try and claim her to an Agni Kai. If they win, they can turn Sanaki in. if they lose they cannot, and Sanaki gets whatever money they have on them. Sanaki’s ‘con’ tricks were simple. She would play as a helpless blind girl to start a fight, and then she would whip any fighter into his (or in seldom cases, her) place: blow Sanaki. This only raised Sanaki’s bounty, since many of these people were respectable citizens. Sanaki didn’t care though, for she had no respect for anyone except for people she loved. Sanaki had won over 152 Agni Kai matches.
“What do you want to talk about?” Kai asked,
“I don’t know, Sanaki replied, “I kind of wanted to try and remember some of my childhood years.”
“You are a very interesting girl, Sanaki,” Kai reassured, “I would like to again hear the story you remember about your parents abandoning you.
“okay,” said Sanaki, “listen carefully...”
