Tera: this... I hold this moment very dear. This should be treated as a sanctuary for my sake. Please...
(Thsi story is what happened on March 25th, Sanaki's birthday, when Sanaki was attacked.)
SANAKI'S 14TH BIRTHDAY
I had been minding my own business, as happy as ever. Today was my birthday after all, so I had all the reason in the world to be happy. It was not every day that someone turned 14. I was out in a clearing. I couldn’t feel anything around me, but I suddenly felt a strange presence. I began to hike up my guard, but then I was suddenly struck across the left side of my neck with something. I could feel that the skin had been severed. I could feel that I was bleeding. Suddenly, I could sense that there was someone right behind me. Being blind, I could not tell her features, but I recognized the feel of this woman. This was Tera, the supernatural.
“Why did you attack me?” I asked; I was frightened. She said nothing. I suddenly felt her latch onto the left side of my neck—where I was bleeding. She was drinking my blood. For some reason though, I did not feel the desire to shake her off. It was as if she was killing me and I was helping it along. It felt almost like a kiss, but in the wrong place. Tera was sucking on the side of my neck where I was bleeding. I felt really awkward, but I said nothing. After a few minutes, she finally let up.
“Tera,” I said, “What are you doing?”
Tera shook her head really fast. She seemed to be snapping out of something. I could feel her looking at me.
“Sanaki,” she exclaimed, “you’re hurt. Did I do that?”
“Yeah,” I replied, “you kind of did.” I suddenly realized that although this was the truth that this was the wrong thing to say. I could sense her turning towards me, with a disgruntled look on her face. Normally I did not concentrate on facial expressions, but hers was so vivid, with her top teeth hanging out of her mouth, covered in my blood. Tera’s teeth were all sharp like fangs. I thought she was going to attack me again. However, she didn’t. I could feel the tension leave her face, and she suddenly looked really sad. It gave me a sudden burst of sympathy.
“Sanaki,” she said, embracing me, “I am so sorry.”
“For what,” I asked stupidly,
“For everything;” she replied, “you, Kai, the whole deal; you’ve always been so… welcoming… to me, despite my cruelty. When I would attack you, you would just ask me to leave you alone. I never listened. I’ve just... I cut myself off from... everything; you, you’re so... understanding”
“Tera,” I said, “it’s okay. People make stupid mistakes all the time.”
“Sanaki,” she told me, “you do realize that you are going to be permanently scarred there, right?”
I nodded, “Tera,” I said, “I can sense good inside of you. You serve a higher authority. You are enshrouded in mystery. I fully understand.”
“If only it was that simple,” I told Sanaki, “but there’s so much more to that. “You have just barely turned 14. I am over 8716 years old. There is so much to the real me that I could be here for your entire lifetime and still not get through it. I’ve done many things in my life, Sanaki Li Chan. Many of them I’m not too proud of. Most of them are dark or violent—evil, perhaps to use a better word. You though, are just so... you understand me so well. You accept me.”
“Tera,” Sanaki told me, “I’ve already told you, “it’s alright. I don’t look back—well, I don’t look at anything. I stay in the present. The past is behind us, and there is nothing that can be done about it. Allow me to explain to you, Tera, how I work: Because of the way I grew up, I learned to accept people for who they are. If we disagree, I’ll hate them for who they are, if we agree, I’ll love them for who they are. I like you for who you are, Tera; not for what you do or don’t do; I can feel sincerity, even in the greatest liar. If you’re offering me your friendship, then I will accept. If not, then I am offering it to you.”
“You,” I exclaimed, “you would actually offer me friendship?”
“That is what I just said,” Sanaki replied bluntly,
I took a step back, shocked. I had never been offered friendship by someone who I had tormented so much. I was about to freak out.
“Tera,” she said, putting her smooth hand onto my shoulder, “relax. It’s going to be okay. I put my hand on Sanaki’s neck. Considering how this kid was the rough-and-tumble type, she had remarkably soft skin, and a very smooth touch.
“Your feet are rough,” she told me, and I felt her gentle hands touching my bare feet, “your skin is rough. What happened?”
“It’s from living a long life,” I replied dismally, “and it comes from walking barefoot for 8716 years. I’ve dressed like an earth kingdom woman for virtually all my life.”
“Ooh,” Sanaki exclaimed, “can I feel your clothes?” I nodded and muttered that I would let her.
“There are some things about you I would like to see though,” I said,
“Okay,” Sanaki replied, “just nothing suggestive”
“Of course not,” I replied, and then I felt the blind girl’s touch.
Tera’s clothing was so soft in contrast with her rough hands and feet. Even her face seemed rough and worn. I felt really bad for her all of a sudden. I could tell that this body was undergoing some form of mental stress. When people were stressed, it made me sad. I set my fingers through her hair. It seemed like mine, but was more coarse and tough.
“You really have been through a lot,” I commented, “but that’s okay. I still like you as a friend for who you re. Don’t ever forget that.” One thing about Tera that took my fancy was the bracelets and anklets she wore, which came from the earth kingdom. There was something about the ones she wore that made me wonder...
“Tera,” I asked, “do these ever get uncomfortable?”
I had removed the anklet off of her left foot.
“Not at all,” Tera replied, taking it from me and slipping it back on, “I personally love wearing them. So, are you through?”
I nodded. Tera was simply starting at me I assumed
“I want to feel your hands and feet,” she said, “you have a certain touch that I’ve never known before. You’re so...”
“Okay,” Sanaki replied, “go ahead. I’m not going to freak out.”
This just made me feel even guiltier. I could totally attack her and she would not have expected a thing. However, I knew what the greater good was, so I refrained. Sanaki’s skin was soft no matter where it was. Her hair was so smooth and flowing. I could tell from the heat in her hands and feet that Sanaki would firebend a lot, but her hands and feet were so soft.
“Have you ever worn shoes?” I asked her,
“Nope,” she replied bluntly and calmly, “have you?”
“I can’t even recall any more,” I replied, “your feet are so soft—even your soles are. You have such a gentle touch, Sanaki. I long for such a warm, inviting aura.”
“I’m sorry Tera,” she said, and suddenly, she embraced me, “I wish I could help change you to be how you wanted to be, but I can’t. I’m still just a little blind firebender girl. You though, are a supernatural with incredible powers. I admire you for them.” She suddenly reached out her hands and put them on my cheeks. She ran them backwards until she hit my ears. My ears were long and pointed, and I had often had people make fun of me for how awkwardly large they were. I braced myself for Sanaki to stop, feel them, and then run away laughing. Sure enough, she stopped, and ran her gentle hands up and down them a couple of times, but then she paused without saying anything.
“Tera,” she said, “your ears are so cool! I wish I had ears like that! They’re so big and they look so... comfortable. They’re nice and soft too.”
Sanaki stroked my right ear several times. She seemed really fascinated with it. I loved her calm, smooth touch against my rough, worn face.
“You actually like my ears?” I exclaimed,
“Yes,” Sanaki replied, “very much so. Tera, I like you for who you are. Regardless of what any of my other friends have to say about it, I’m going to be your friend.”
I was speechless. Sanaki then embraced me and stayed there for a few minutes. I did not say a single word.
“Do you mind if I go and talk with one of my other friends now?” she asked me. I said nothing for a moment.
“Go ahead,” were the words that formed out of my mouth, “you have fun. I’ll just be here if you want to talk to me again...”
“Okay,” Sanaki replied, walking off slowly, “I’ll be sure to remember that.” I watched as the little blind girl cheerfully skipped off. The side of her neck was still bleeding, and I felt so terrible that I had permanently damaged such a delicate body. Nonetheless, a small smile appeared across my face for the first time in what felt like a literal age...
