WARNING! SOILERS FOR THE EASTERN AIR TEMPLE AND THE FIREBENDING MASTER IN THE FOLLOWING POST!!
I don't really see Zuko or Mai as really depressed people. Yes, they had a troubled past. Bu half the show has been consumed with Zuko getting past that. I think Mai is a little depressed, yeah. It's understandable. But I think mostly she is just a very thoughtful person who prefures to think things through before stating her mind. Zuko isn't tottaly depressed wither. He's mislead for much of the series, has a killer temper, and is possibly a bit naive. But not really, truly depressed. I think the two are very simaler. They understand each other and get how the other ticks. I think Zuko's a pretty sweet guy when he's wants to be, even with his temper and navitivity. Mai's really lucky to have him. Also, I just can't see Zutara happening now after seeing 'The Eastern Air Temple' and 'The Firebending Master'. Before then, I'd be fifty-fifty. Quite frankly my enitre opian of Katara dropped six notchs. Also her whole 'touch Aang and I will kill you' speech in 'The Eastern Air Temple' leans me heavily towards Kataang. On a more personal note I think that the whole thing will go one of three ways. One, Mai will defect from Azula, probably at the last minute, to join her true love. I'm sorry but this would need an on going side plot starting very soon for me to see it working and has the least amount of likelyhood of happening. Another option towards the couple would be Azula threatens Zuko's life if Mai doesn't serve her or visa versa. However the most likely option for the writers at this point is for Mai, even if she does love Zuko, to stay true to Azula, probably abusing Zuko's attraction to her to further Azula's wims.
