The Golden Anklet
- How long will you be gone, honey? Nima looked worried at her husband.
- Not for two long, I think 3 weeks. They can’t pull it longer than that. Tasu put on a brave face.
- Okay, Nima said. Nima looked down again at her little baby and placed her hands on the baby’s cheek. She gave birth to this lovely girl two months ago.
Tasu looked at his wife lying there on the bed with Ayumi in her arms. The sad thing is that he won’t be able to see his wife nor his daughter before after 3 weeks. He was happy Samara, the nun that had been a friend of the family for years, had helped his wife many of the times when he should be there. He remembered he had to thank Samara for all those times, because it was soon time for her to step in again.
- I’m sorry I’m going to be gone. If I could, I would stay here with you, and our little Ayumi. He looked at the little baby who was wrapped in so many blankets you could barely see her face.
- Well, I love you honey and your brave heart too. The earth kingdom is very powerful. To fight them is a brave thing, thinking of how little your troop is. Nima looked worried at him again.
- Don’t worry about me. I’m willing to fight for our Nation – we were born to serve the nation and build it, and it’s both our duties to keep that honor. Whether you’re a soldier or not. Nima, you’re one of the many women who have given birth to our future generation. Me? I’m just a soldier who fights in the wars, but I defend my country. That’s why we’re both important parts of this life.
- What life is it if my husband has to travel all the way to the earth kingdom, leaving me and my daughter all alone?
- Samara will be there for you. And try to get better, honey I’m a little worried about your fever.
- I’ll be fine. Let’s just hope it’s nothing serious.
Tasu kissed Nima on her forehead.
- Yeah. Well, I have to go now. I love you. Good bye Nima.
And then Tasu put on his helmet and left the house.
- 2 weeks later -
- Samara, would you get some milk for Ayumi, please? I think it’s time to feed her. Nima, who was lying on the bed, was calling to Samara who was in the kitchen.
- Yes, of course. Samara replied. - Just let me warm it up.
And then she came to Nima holding a bottle of milk in her left hand.
- Here you go, dear.
- Thanks.
Then, someone knocked on the door.
- Who is it? Samara yelled.
- It’s me. Shin Fu.
- Oh! Let him come in. Nima smiled. - It’s an old friend of Tasu.
- All right then. Samara went to the door and opened it. Shin Fu stepped in.
He saw Nima lying there on the bed. He noticed she looked ill. Nima got up of her bed and sat on it instead.
- It’s good to see you again, Nima. Shin Fu said.
- It’s good to see you too. You’ve broken your arm?
- Yes, it’s not as bad as it looks. The doctor says it will get better.
- Oh, good to hear. I thought you were with Tasu and the rest of his troop? So how come you’re home so early?
- Well, I came home early because I have some bad news to you. As you see I’ve been wounded, and I wasn’t the only one. Many of our men got hurt badly. The earth kingdom was too prepared for us. And many didn’t make it, I’m sorry to say it… but your husband was one of them. Shin Fu placed his hand on Nima’s back.
Nima got shocked. Her eyes looked at Shin Fu’s face, and then they got filled with tears. Her lips were shivering. She didn’t know what to say. Samara sat in another corner looking at them, she was shocked too.
- I’m really sorry, Nima. Tasu gave me this anklet right before he died in my arms. He told me to give you this, it’s to Ayumi. It’s engraved with your and Tasu’s names on. It was supposed to be a gift to Ayumi when he would get back.
Tasu held a golden anklet in front of Nima. It was a beautiful piece of jewellery. But Nima only had tears in her eyes still. She thought the anklet was beautiful, but she was sad. Almost mumbling she whispered:
- Thank you. Then she took the anklet.
Shin Fu had to leave, so he said good bye to Nima and Samara. Samara went and made some tea. She felt really sorry for Nima. They both sat there, drinking tea without saying a word. Nima was grieving, and Samara was looking out the window… the weather had already turned gray.
