Nun Samara’s story
Three days had gone after the terrible news. This day Nima was really ill. She was coughing all the time. Sometimes even with blood. Her forehead was hotter than ever and she could barely move. The illness was indescribable. They didn’t know what it was. But she was certainly not getting better. The doctor told Samara a few days ago, that this illness was very rare. There hadn’t been developed any cure for this illness yet and if the worst comes to the worst, Nima could die. But the doctor wasn’t sure when or if that would happen as the illness was unstable.
- Are you okay, dear? Samara was feeling Nima’s forehead. – It’s pretty hot.
- Not really... *cough* could I have that water please?
- Yes, of course. Samara gave Nima the glass of water that was standing on the table next to the bed.
- I, I think we’re out of food. Would you mind checking the kitchen if you need to go shopping? Nima coughed again.
- Okay. But you stay here. Now, let me check. Samara went to the kitchen.
- Hmm... It looks like it’s empty in here. Samara was checking the cabinets, and there was almost no food left. – I think I have to go shopping down town, dear. Will you be fine while I’m gone?
- Of course. Just go. Nima coughed again.
- Okay, dear. Then Samara went out, closing the door carefully after her so she wouldn’t wake up Ayumi.
On her way back home she heard Ayumi crying inside the house. She was crying and crying. Samara quickly ran towards the house, holding the bags in her hands. She opened the door and dropped the bags immediately. Then, she ran to the baby. Picked Ayumi up and tried to calm her down. She walked to Nima’s bedroom holding Ayumi in her arms.
- Nima, you there? Are you awake? I heard Ayumi crying constantly. Sorry I couldn’t hurry up faster. N-Nima…?
But all Samara could hear was Nima coughing. Then, the coughing stopped. Samara dropped Ayumi in a bed nearby and then looked at Nima.
- Nima, are you there? Can you hear me? Samara gave Nima’s arm a shake.
But Nima had closed her eyes. She didn’t move. She was barely breathing.
- Oh dear God! I have to find a doctor. Nima, don’t stop breathing, do you hear me?
Samara rushed down town, with fear in her eyes. She found her way to the mini hospital.
- Please, I need a doctor, it’s an emergency!
Another person who seemed to be a nurse quickly found her a doctor. Samara brought the doctor home and he took a look at Nima. He started to take her pulse. Nima had stopped coughing, but she had stopped breathing too.
- How is she? Samara asked the doctor worried than ever.
- I-I’m afraid she’s… dead. The doctor said.
- A-are you sure? Try to take her pulse again? Her eyes refilled some tears.
- Yes I’m sure, nun Samara. I think she died just two hours ago.
- Oh no, it’s my entire fault! If I hadn’t left her to go down town, maybe she would still be…
- No, it’s not your fault. She would die sooner or later. There was nothing you could do to prevent this from happening.
Samara started crying.
- I’m truly sorry. Who’s that baby? The doctor pointed at the little bed in the room.
- It’s Ayumi. Nima’s daughter. She’s only two and a half months old. Her dad just died, and now… her mother. She cried again.
- So sad, that poor baby. Nun Samara… I think we both know what you have to do. It would be best if we let you take care of her. No one knew the Li Fung family better than you.
- Yes, I have to bring little Ayumi with me to the nunnery where I live. The White Chrysanthemum convent.
- I heard there are a school and an orphanage too nearby? They belong to the White Chrysanthemum, right?
- That’s right. Now, it tears my heart that I can’t keep Ayumi for ever. I have to let someone adopt her. Samara dried her tears with a blanket.
She looked at the little baby that was now sleeping.
- She has to grow up in a normal home. She finally said.
