it's just part of a new concept I'm trying out... there are going to be about 6 or 7 of these, one for each of the main characters in the series. Some of these are actual avatar characters, but since 19 years have passed, many of them have changed.
BTW, these are for my series "The Cycle Survived". links to the chapters can be found under the appropriate category in this thread. (under "The Cycle Survived--sequel to avatar: Mysteries")
KATARA
Katara is the current chief of the water tribes, having been promoted to the office at the age of 21. Now 33, she still holds that position, for she is the 2nd (maybe now 3rd with Kai Serenes II) most powerful waterbender alive. This is also the reason she lives in the Northern Water Tribe as opposed to the southern water tribe, her native homeland. Originally, Kai Serenes was going to be chosen to be tribe chief; however, she declined, saying Katara would make a much better leader. Additionally, Kai’s outrageously selfless nature would make it difficult for her to properly rule when necessary.
Katara’s appearance has not changed much. She has grown two inches shorter since the time she was 14, but this could be mainly because of the stress she has been undergoing for the last 3 years. She often wears the clothing of a tribe chief, but will also go much less formal, especially when around her friends. It has been seen that she also goes barefoot in certain places, principles she seems to have adopted from Kai Serenes or Sanaki Li Chan. On her right hand there is a small binding which conceals a mark on her hand. This mark is a symbol of an alliance that the three leaders formed. Katara’s concealed symbol is that of the Water Tribes obviously, and it is blue.
Katara’s personality has changed a little in the last 19 years. She’s still the loving motherly figure, but instead of her aggressive and hostile attitude, she has one of sorrow and lament for her late husband, Zuko. Katara does her best to appear cheerful when in public, but often locks herself in her chamber when she can so she can be alone and lament her fallen husband Zuko—their devastated love is very hard on Katara. Altogether however, Katara is now a very pleasant person to be around, but sometimes she might break down from her tragedies and need someone to lean on.
Katara stands at 5’4” and is very thin. Her hair, which now extends almost to her knees, was once very well-kept and elaborate, but similar to Katara’s body, it fell into neglect at the death of her husband. Zuko had always admired how much time she spent on her hair, but he also liked it when it was scraggly. Perhaps another reason she failed to tend it was because of this. In one of the chapters, she claimed it was a tribute to Zuko. However, the trademark loops of hair she had on both sides of her face still remain, only now they are larger. Nonetheless, the reason for Katara’s small, thin frame and hair that is now damaged beyond repair was because of Katara’s stress factor. Even today, she hardly eats or sleeps, and heavy signs of stress can be seen on her face. Her cheeks are often bleeding, because she gets frustrated easily and tears stream down them so frequently that nothing can be done.
Katara is a very unusual character in the series. She seems like a minor character at first, but later on in the series, her role becomes huge. It is known that she travels a lot in the series, and is very difficult to find, and thus is seldom seen. Her behavior is sometimes erratic and her objectives are unpredictable. However, her loyalty to her friends, old and new, is still unwavering, and Katara is a loyal companion. She also has two children.
RELATIONSHIPS
SOKKA—Katara is still Sokka’s younger sister, but there is a 10-inch height difference between them. Katara makes fun of Sokka for being so concerned about his appearance, while Sokka makes fun of Katara for her rough, scraggly appearance. The irony in this is that it used to be the other way around when these two were younger. Additionally, the small signs of sibling rivalry live on in these two.
TOPH—Katara and Toph share a relationship now, owing to their social status as rulers of their respective nations. Similarly, Katara holds respect for Toph, for Toph has done the same thing to her.
ZUKO—Katara loved Zuko with all her heart and he felt the same way about her, even to the point where he willingly gave up his position in the fire nation to be with her. They married 8 years after the current series, and have since then had two children; the first being named Sokka Hakoda, and the 2nd being named Katara Altina. Katara was completely devastated—some say destroyed—upon Zuko’s death. Nowadays, her children live with her old friend Zuki Meisha, for Katara does not want them to have to live with a mother who is too stressed to deal with them. It hurt Katara to do this, but she wanted the children to grow up with a loving guardian. She sometimes sees them, but because of her erratic behaviors and traveling habits, it does not happen often. It was Zuko’s death that made Katara neglect taking care of herself.
IROH—Katara does not seem to have a distinct relationship with Iroh in the series. However, it is known that Katara respects Iroh and occasionally visits him in additional respect to Zuko. Zuko being his nephew, Iroh also laments his loss with Katara.
TY LEE—Katara seems to be friends with Ty Lee, her happy go-lucky attitude helping to cheer Katara up when she’s down. Katara does not seem to mind Ty Lee wandering all over the Northern Water Tribe, and Katara tries to defend Ty Lee when Sokka gets after her over various things, even when they really are Ty Lee’s fault.
SANAKI—Katara has always been fond of Sanaki, thinking that she was a cute little girl. She also shares the secret bond with Sanaki, Sanaki being the ruler of the other nation. Katara did disapprove of Sanaki’s poor hygiene skills before, but now that she’s fallen into that state herself, she shrugs it off, and the two women are still great friends.
MAI—since Mai’s role is minimal in the series, it is unknown how these characters view each other. It does seem that they have patched things up in recent years though and are okay friends.
TERA—ever since the night where Zuko first killed Katara and she was revived, Katara has had a close connection with Tera. During the time where she and Zuko were demented and seemed unstable, many things were happening, most of which have not been yet revealed. When Tera switched sides on her and the gang, Katara saw a glint in Tera’s eye that showed somber regret and sadness. She did not reveal this to the other characters, and it is unknown whether to not she ever will. Tera has remained hidden a lot, but she has visited Katara many times before, and she has patched things up as best she could. Katara and Tera share a very close and secret bond that is not revealed until near the end of the story. However, Katara’s unswerving loyalty assures Tera that neither of them will double-cross the other.
KAI SERENES I&II—Katara has had a close relationship to Kai because of Kai’s waterbending prowess and her association with the Northern Water Tribe. Just like most of the general population, Kai is beloved to Katara, and a true friend willing to help out. Additionally, Katara has taken a liking for Kai II as well, saying she’s taken after her mother. Katara is proud of her, and hopes that one day her children will be able to grow up like Kai II.
ZUKI: Katara is very close with Zuki, particularly because she left her children in Zuki's care. of course, Zuki, being the happy, humorous type that she is, is quite difficult to hate unless you hate her for her incessant stupidity. despite this obvious lack of intelligence, Zuki and Katara are also great friends.
CLAZDIAN: Katara hates Clazdian with all her heart, for he was the reason that Zuko is dead. However, Clazdian seems to want to target her over any of the others. Perhaps it is because of her connection with Tera, but at the current time such things are undetermined. Clazdian has been able to capture and torment Katara because of the dark connection they had 19 years ago when they were killed. What this connection is is not known at the moment either.
FUTURE: (CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS)
Katara ends up playing a vital role towards the end of the saga. She gets herself into a load of trouble and pain before she finally joins the group, and from there, her fate lies in the final chapters.
