Tera: this one is a little weird...
I mean, it was kinda a mix between something that happened a long time ago before I was married and what happened in current times. oh well...
ALMOST HUMAN
I sighed once again, for I was depressed again. This had been an issue I had been dealing with for a long time, and I didn’t know why I was dwelling on it so much. I knew that no matter how much I had wanted it, that it was never going to happen. Still, every time I looked at Kai, or Sanaki, or Zuki, or any of them, I sort of had a longing. After all, they had never been rejected because of powers they were born with—powers that they did not want. They did not have distinct features that made them look so close, yet so different. I sighed again.
The events that followed were somewhat predictable, and yet I had not thought of them until after I sighed. It seemed every time I was down, there was someone to cheer me up. Usually, it was Sanaki. This time, sure enough Sanaki was sitting beside me.
“What’s the matter, Tera?” she asked me,
“Nothing,” I replied, “I was just thinking what it would be like if I were human. I mean, I’m so lonely here. My whole family is gone.”
“What are you talking about, Tera?” Sanaki exclaimed, “It’s all around you. That’s what we’re here for.”
“Sanaki,” said Tera, “do you realize that all of my pain and suffering has been because of what I am and who I am? Do you not realize that if I were human that none of that would have happened?”
“I,” Sanaki stammered, “I do.” She paused.
“But Tera,” she pleaded, “Do you remember when Saza and I almost broke up? Do you remember who it was who saved us?”
I remained silent. I knew the answer.
“It was you, Tera,” said Sanaki, “do you realize what would have happened? I was going to die, Tera. I was going to die.”
I could see tears forming in Sanaki’s eyes, so I removed my blue hair thingy and let my hair fall in my face to cover my eyes.
“Sanaki,” I said, “it is also because of my powers that I have tried to kill you several times throughout your short little life. I hate them, Sanaki. If I could, I would get rid of them”
At once, I could tell from Sanaki’s facial expression that this had been the wrong thing to say. She started sobbing.
“Tera,” she sobbed, “don’t say that.”
“Sanaki,” I said bitterly, “no matter how much you cry, that is still true. I never wanted powers like this. I just wanted to be normal—to be human. My life is too complicated.”
Sanaki grabbed my right arm and used it to wipe away her tears, but they kept coming.
“Sanaki,” I said, “please don’t cry; please.”
“Tera,” she wailed, “you don’t realize how much better off you are not being human. I...”
And then suddenly she stopped.
“Tera,” she said, “you ARE almost human. You just look a little different.”
“Yeah,” I said, “I have huge glowing yellow eyes and ridiculously large ears; easy tell-tale signs I’m not, Sanaki.”
“Tera,” Sanaki said, with a serious tone; “you’re depressed. I can feel it.”
“Why am I depressed though,” I asked her, “tell me. You can interpret the emotions of others.”
“Your mind is hard to read,” said Sanaki, taking my arm to wipe her face again. I don’t know why I let her do that, but something inside just sort of told me that I should. I looked down to see that my bracelet and my hand were wet with her tears.
“You’re just worried,” Sanaki replied, “you’re depressed about Clazdian again. Tera, the subject of you not being human was one I thought you overcame ages ago.”
“I just need someone to lean on, Sanaki,” I told her, “I mean, yeah, you’re right. I’m just depressed and looking for something to mope about.”
“Well,” said Sanaki, “you always have me. Or you have Remus. Tera, you’re married. You have 3 beautiful children. You used to think that supernaturals couldn’t do that. Now, you actually have a blood family alongside your family around you. Wait right there, I’ll be back.”
Sanaki came back taking Remus by the hand. In his other arm, comfortably asleep, were my children.
“This is the man you need to talk to,” Sanaki told me, “if you’re depressed, this is what he’s here for.”
“She took my words, Tera,” said Remus, “but she’s completely correct. I’m here for you to lean on. It’s what a good husband will do. So, what is the problem you need help with?”
I explained to him about how I was “almost human”. He chuckled.
“Tera,” he said, “look around you. You have a family. These beautiful children came from you. You are their mother. Look into their eyes Tera and tell me what you see.”
I looked into their faces and saw the faces of three tiny supernaturals starting back at me with wide, adorable eyes. They neither had my eyes nor Remus’ nor were their hair like mine or Remus’ and their ears were different as well. They only looked like us if you crossed the two of us together, they were truly our children. I turned to Remus, but he only smiled at me.
“It looks like the children want their mother,” said Remus, and he handed all three of them to me very gently right as I finished putting my blue hair thingy back in. I looked down at them and they smiled back at me.
“Tera,” said a voice from behind us that I recognized as Sanaki’s,
“you are loved, even if you’re not human. Look beside you. That man next to you is not human. Those babies in your arms are not human. Look how happy they are though. They know they have a loving mother to care for them. Remus knows that he has a loving wife as well. Tera, I all of a sudden know why you changed. It was not merely me, but perhaps you were feeling Remus’ presence from somewhere far off. You two were calling out to each other. The spirits of those three children, and probably many more, were and are calling for you. Tera, even if you didn’t have a loving husband and children at your side, you’d still have me, the Serenes Family, Mikaya, Saza, Zuki, and everyone else. You are far from hated nowadays, Tera. The only Tera anyone hated was the one who hated everyone else. You’re nice now. We love you.”
“You’re lucky to know such a kid, Tera,” said Remus, “she’s a bright one. I can see why you liked to lean on her.”
I smiled. I would have hugged Remus, but my children had fallen asleep.
“Here,” said Remus, taking them, “let’s put them down.”
Remus put them down on their bed and gently tucked them in. Remus may have been a tough man, but he was a very gentle father. He treated everyone, including his children, and me, his wife, with utmost care, love, and respect. For me, this was my perfect man.
“Tera,” he said, “don’t worry about not being human. If it makes you feel better, you’re human enough for me. I bet Sanaki would agree.”
I hugged Remus and smiled.
“Okay, I said, “Since you say so.”
“I do,” Remus replied, “just like I did on the day we were married. Come here, you!”
Remus grabbed my hand and threw me into the air. He jumped up and caught me by my feet and tossed me up again. When he did, he was left holding the anklet that used to be on my left foot. I landed in his arms and laughed.
“I love you, Remus,” I said smiling. And then we kissed. During the course of this, thoughts were traveling through my head, and they were happy ones. I loved Remus with all my heart and never wanted to leave him, so I never would.
“Here” he laughed, handing my anklet back to me, “you dropped this.”
I chuckled and grabbed him around the neck again. After all, I was still in his arms.
“You really were the one for me,” I said, “thank you so much for being here for me, Remus.”
“You’re welcome,” Remus shrugged, still smiling. He set me down, I returned my anklet to my foot, and then we snuggled up next to our children, looking from them to each other’s eyes, smiling.
Tera: sorry about the personal romance and that at the end...
