the next installment in Sanaki's life story...
I have one more chapter from her, and then we'll get some flashbacks from Tera about Sanaki's family...
CHAPTER 7
Life at the Boiling Rock could have been a lot worse. Luckily, I was a happy girl that did not let very many things get me down, but one time, I lost control and was caught firebending. I was taken to a place known only as the coolers and locked in.
It was freezing in there. I was scared, because for the first time, I was completely blind. I had no feeling. I huddled myself into a ball and remained motionless. Then I decided to get a feel for the place. It was larger than I thought, and I was too short to know where the ceiling was.
I was later taken out, and after I had regained myself, I thought of something. That chamber I had been in was made of ice. Ice was made of water. I suddenly had a plan. I found Kai and Zihark in the same area, for I had snuck off.
“Kai, Zihark,” I whispered; luckily I had come during a down time. “I found a way out.”
“Really now,” Zihark exclaimed quietly, “that was fast.”
“It’s simple really.” I replied, “We need to get the three of us into one of those coolers. From there, we need to make it look like it accidentally broke off. There is ice in the coolers, which you two could convert into water. That would be your means of getting it broken off of the main building.”
“But we’re waterbenders,” said Kai, “They’re not gong to put us in there. We obviously can’t firebend.”
“That’s where I come in,” I replied, smiling, “I’ll make it look like you two got into a fight and started firebending. They’ll see me where I’m not supposed to be and take me as well. I’m notorious for wandering off.”
“Sanaki,” said Kai, “have they been hurting you at all?”
“No,” I replied calmly, “they just threw me into the cooler once, and that was how I figured this out.”
“But,” said Zihark, “won’t the noise from us breaking off of the building catch the attention of the watchmen,”
“Aye,” I replied, “that it why we need to make sure we go into the water.”
“But the water is boiling hot,” Kai exclaimed, “Sanaki, this is not called the boiling rock for no reason.”
“Kai; Zihark,” I said, “I know what I’m doing. “We need to go below the water, and that is where your waterbending skills will come in handy. We will remain underneath the water. You two will bend it away. I have heard stories about a certain bender girl once doing the same thing.”
“That might actually work,” said Zihark, “and once we get past that, we can simply make it a boat.”
“Aye,” I replied, “because we’re all really good benders—mostly you two though. It’s not like we’d be at the mercy of the Fire Nation. Speaking of which, why is the Fire Nation against the rest of the world? I thought there was a war like that years and years ago.”
“It is something from within the fire nation, Sanaki,” said Kai, “and—oh, here they come.”
The guards shouted, and I motioned to Zihark and Kai that his was their cue. They seemed hesitant at first, but then began quarreling. Their “fight” ended up in me using some fire to make it look like it came from Kai or Zihark, and the three of us were rounded up and taken to a cooler. My plan had worked to my utmost surprise.
“And now,” I said, shivering, “you two know what to do.”
We ended up breaking off in such a manner that we got about ¾ of the circle—this would make a much better boat than I expected. We plunged towards the boiling water, and Kai and Zihark were skilled enough to make the water they were getting rid of look like part of the splash. We went under and were beneath the boiling lake. However, Kai and Zihark were able to keep us dry and safe, despite being at the bottom of this lake. I wished I could have helped them, but they were adults and I was just a kid—or so they told me.”
“Sir,” said one of the guards to one of a higher rank, “did you just see what happened?”
“Of course I did, you idiot,” he replied, “and if anyone is in there they surely burned to death by now. The chamber has not even surfaced yet.”
Of course, we did not hear this, but we did not need to. By sunset that same day, we had crossed the mountain and were on the other side in open water.”
“So,” I said, “which way to land?”
“Our nearest location is the Western Air Temple,” said Zihark, “and perhaps we can convince some of the air sisters to come out of hiding.”
“Well, Zihark,” I said, “you and Kai were practically meant for each other. You’re both so serene and kind. I’m pretty sure that because of your natures that you’ll be able to bring the air sisters out.”
I could feel both Kai and Zihark blushing. I did not need to ask them if they loved each other, but I was already cooking up a plan on how to remedy this. Kai and Zihark needed to be together for time and all eternity. I could just feel it. However, I decided not to say anything, seeing as both of them were really shy and I did not want to embarrass them when there was nowhere else to go. Luckily I had stolen some food previous to our departure, but we mostly survived on water, which Kai purified for us. It was unbelievable that my plan had come off so well. It was almost as if there should have been a catch...
