WARNING: YOU ARE ABOUT TO STEP INTO A RANT!!!
I'm sure you've all noticed. add up all the ships in avatar. now, take away any that involve Katara. the number drops dramatically... probably by about half. what makes poor Katara the victim of such madness? =3
to me, maybe it might be main character-ness+hotness, but either way, I've noticed that Katara has literally been put with everyone from the show, good bad, ugly, and even... well, never mind.
of course, I've never really seen a fanfic (or fancomic, fanart, anything for that matter) that is related to a Katara-ship that shows Katara in-character. maybe it's jsut me, maybe I don't look hard enough, but honestly, is Katara really after man meat as much as people make her out to be? (as for any ship involving Katara with another girl, I'm not even going to bother with those, since Katara is the 2nd-to-last character I think who would do that [the first being Toph, but I'll give a rant on Toph later]. any Katara+girl ship is so outrageously out-of-character for her that I'm stopping here. anyways...)
to me, Katara being paired with someone as canon doesn't really seem to fit her character. she seems like the loving, supportive type rather than someone trying to find a BF (Sokka for example, would not fall under that category, but like with the Toph rant, I'll get into it later.) In fact, even her little last performance at the end of the series with Aang was a bit out of character in my opinion... especially after what she had done with Zuko. sure she loves Aang, but come on, he's a freaking kid (who, let's note, has not hit puberty yet). she's not much different,.
incidentally, I also don't really think that if she had done the same thing to Zuko that I would have thought differently (so if anyone thought I was being biased 'coz I'm a Zutarian, they're WRONG! HA!). to be honest, I think the most in-character thing they could have done to Katara pairing-wise would be to have her by herself. she just doesn't seem to have a love interest by the end of season 3. the Aang thing kinda came out of nowhere. (and in my opinion was very stupid.)
so what if Katara had gotten with Zuko? well, with all the shipping that goes on with that poor ship-tormented girl, I probably would still have these viewpoints. Katara has never really expressed an interest with anyone, with one exception--Jet. of course, Jet was a moron, (and granted, he's dead now) and so even that was crushed.
Katara being lonely? that's blasphemy!
c'mon, she's 14. and surely because of her reputation for saving the world (despite the Fire Nation bias) probably made her more well-known that she would have been otherwise. but I guess what my point is, is that Katara doesn't really seem to have a love life. I guess I should break it down...
AANG-Katara likes Aang. even the Zutarians know that. Aang likes Katara. even the dumbest idiot could tell that. The difference is, (despite being really young) Aang has love interest in Katara, and Katara seems more of a motherly figure rather than a lover. msot people are gonna admit that the Kataang ending kinda came out of nowhere, was rushed, or something to that likeness. I personally thought it was kinda out of character. maybe I'm just being paranoid though. who knows?
KATARA/SOKKA-Katara by herself would have been her best bet in my opinion. I'd elaborate, but that's kinda what I've been doing this whole time. but as for Sokka? incest... it makes me laugh when I hear of such ships. I have nothing more to say about this.
TOPH-Slash shipping... I love it. however, this is the one slash ship that I loathe, and I don't really even know why. needless to say, even if Katara DID for some reason fall for Toph, Toph is not the same way. I've seen enough of this ship to last a while, thank you.
ZUKO-312. Zuko joins group. Katara hates Zuko. Zutara fans go nuts. and then with all the Zutara buildup towards the end, you would have thought it would have happened, huh? well, despite the fact that I would have hoped so, I believe that even Katara+Zuko would have been a little off. though it didn't seem as off as Kataang, it just didn't seem like something Katara would do. if anything, put enough of the actions given off in the storyline and you'd think Katara would end up by herself. just my thoughts on the matter.
IROH-this would have been win. everyone and their dog knows Iroh is a pimp. if I ever write a Katara+Iroh fic (which I might do just to be funny) it'll involve Jun's Shirisu paralyzing Katara (when she's in her fire nation outfit of course, as that's more revealing) and then Iroh feigning paralysis on top of her. he'd have oil on one of his hands, and he'd claim to be making uncontrollable circular movements on Katara's exposed stomach, much to her displeasure. the paralysis would last long enough though that Katara would eventually become fond of it, and they would live happily ever after. so yeah. Katara + Iroh = win + laughs.
AZULA-um, no? maybe that little Zuko/Azula/Katara spar might have aprked the shippers, but either way, Azula is psycho. poor Katara would find herself violated in so many ways that it would almost make me laugh. honestly, I feel sorry for the poor girl... she needs a break from all the menacing fans.
TY LEE/MAI-both are kind grey area, but since they're girls it's a no-no. do I really need to elaborate more on this or can you just take my word for it? x3
OZAI-poor Katara would be abused. so I guess this is the ship for Katara haters. I'm too lazy to say much more about it, but every time I think of Ozai I think of Iroh, and so that Katara+Iroh fic might end up coming anyways.
JET-Katara showed interest in Jet. make no mistake about it. I'm pretty sure they would have ended up together if Jet hadn't have died. if they didn't it'd be the Kataang bias of Mike and Bryan that kept them apart. I think they would have done well together. screw Aang. anyways, Jet's gone, and he was kind of an idiot anyways, yet Katara seemed to somehow accept him before the end. although maybe there was some grudging... maybe that was the reason she didn't use spirit water...
