well, they were all kinda stupid kids...
but yeah, Alzar decided to chance it, and unfortunately, she lost.

somehow though, she was able to keep her diminishing eyesight a secret from her parents, who could have helped her had they known. (her heat-sense helped with that, 'coz she had it before she lost her eyesight)

and to this day, she hides it well.
but yeah, descendants of the original Sanaki were famous for having that "heat-sense". Alzar had it even though she wasn't blind, so she was amazing.
when she lost her eyesight though, she was still able to manage practically normally because of that.

but yeah, her parent's reaction when they found out makes Alzar so mad even to this day...

why at herself?

because it was her fault for not telling. when her parents found out they were only upset at her for not telling them. they wanted to (and would have) helped her.

yeah. she and her parents were real close. those four very tight-knit, and their families were good friends with each other as well. they all knew each other's parents on a personal level.

of course, the fact that they were all of different social classes kinda kept them from getting more friends than their group.
I mean, Shinon and Aiku were from low-class families, Zinjamyn was from a middle-class family, and Alzar was from a high-class family.

so the high-class kids shunned Alzar for associating with "lowlifes" like them, the middle-class kids shunned Zinjamyn because they thought he was not content with being middle class (wanting to be ower or higher) and the low-class kids shunned Aiku and Shinon because they thought those two thought they were too god for the other low-class folks.

but yeah, these four families pretty much shared everything (which involved Alzar's folks being really generous,)

exactly.
the fact that their only friends were each other didn't affect them.
and the fact that they were all master benders by age 10 helped too.

(they're literally the best in the world. clearly they had to have been masters at an early age)
