I mean, they were clearly prodigies...
and they'd usually practice bending together, since they were the only people they hung out with.
bending was like their hobby.

yep.
of course, Zakura usually cheats and will use one or mroe of her other elements, so they'd have to gang up on her...
but yeah, Zakura may seemingly treat them like crap, but truth be told, The Four Benders would feel like their purpose was defeated if Zakura was gone. after Avatar Lahka's death (they were around 6-9 at that time--brilliant little kids) their ambition was to find and teach the next avatar, and so they trained themselves to be worthy of such a feat.
and if the avatar was gone, they'd feel like they did it all for nothing.

they were some pretty big dreamers when they were younger. Most kids probably didn't think they had the skill to train the avatar.

I mean, obviosuly their parents were all skilled benders, and naturally their children were and are the same way.
