A battle story taken from another site that I was once a part of. This is not really an alternate universe, just an alternate location. This is during the time of Aang, and the 100-year war, etc.
It is told from the points of views of the two combatants: Dento, a 38-year-old firebending master who is a member of The Order of the White Lotus, and Tenoko, a mystic, nomadic, 34-year-old waterbending master who has fled from the Southern Water Tribe after it was consistently raided by the Fire Nation. I'd post disclaimers about the characters, events and such, but that is irrelevant, because no one ever reads that sort of thing. Each post alternates the point of view, so one post will be Tenoko's, and then the next one will be Dento's, and so on, and so forth.
Anyways, rant concluded. Story time.

The Fire Nation—the small continent in the world's Western Hemisphere—The continent whose people had been striving for the past 100 years to expand their boundaries into the rest of the world—to rule it with their fist of iron. This was the nation that had cause much of the rest of the world so much grief in this past century, and Tenoko's life was not one of the few that was unaffected. This was the same nation that housed the people that had destroyed her early life--these were the same people who had murdered her husband and infant children nearly 16 years ago. Now that she was actually in the heart of their lands, these were some of the thoughts that were crossing through her mind. Had this been more recent, she would have likely broken down, but now, at 34 years, she figured that it was far behind her, and that the only thing left for her to do would be to make her dead husband and children proud of their mother. She could almost feel them watching her from wherever they were, and this had kept her valiant. Normally, to be this close to the heart of the land which was responsible for tearing them would have torn Tenoko apart; this time though, was for some reason different.
The waterbender took a look at her surroundings. Grateful that she always had a lot of water to bend on her, she also figured that if bad turned to worse that she would be able to collect the beads of sweat that were rapidly forming on her forehead and under her clothes and use those if nothing else. This environment was much too hot for Tenoko to call comfortable, especially as a woman who hailed from one of the coldest places in the world—The Southern Water Tribe. She frowned. She was looking around for her opponent, though she did not see him in her view yet. She kept her guard up in case it was a surprise attack, but at the same time, she was not paying as much attention as she probably should have been. At the moment, strategies, calculations, plans, and other tactics were flowing through her mind like the gentle rush of cool, crystal clear water, which she enjoyed with a similar passion to her meditation. Letting her thoughts flow freely was how the waterbender cleared her mind and helped her focus in combat. She glanced around again, and had already come to a couple of conclusions.
"My opponent will clearly have the advantage," Tenoko thought to herself, not even knowing who her opponent was, not even his or her gender; "even if he isn't a firebender. Fire is the opposite of Water, and with the heat of the location and the nearby volcano, combined with the powerful forces of the sun which are strongest in this Western Region, a firebender would clearly have the advantage. A waterbender's specialties would be the opposite: cooler climate, closer to one of the poles, and surrounded by a mountain of ice as opposed to a volcano. Regardless, even if for some reason my opponent does not have an advantage, I still have a disadvantage."
Tenoko lifted her arm to wipe the sweat from her forehead, but stopped herself again. If her opponent was capable of powerful firebending he or she would possibly be able to reduce her water to mere steam and vapor, and although she might be able to recover some of it, much of her water would be lost, thus reducing her bending prowess. The water emitting from Tenoko's body in the form of sweat would possibly be her last resort. After all, Tenoko was known in combat for her unorthodox style. Without using bending, she practiced a few of the core martial arts moves that bending moves used. This too was unorthodox, as Tenoko's style had been adopted from the people she had fought or trained with, which had included not just waterbenders, but earthbenders and firebenders too. Halfway into her hand-to-hand combat practice she suddenly opened one of her water skins and slammed a bolt of water into a nearby rock, shattering it. Tenoko smirked, quickly retracting the water.
She bent down to feel the black, volcanic rocks in the area. Even they were hot. A small rumble brought her back to maximum alertness, and she quickly stood up, taking a defensive stance. Glancing around, she still saw nothing, but she noticed that the volcano had coughed up a little more lava. Looking around a little further, from the dark red sky which, despite covered in volcanic clouds did little, if anything, to hinder the powerful forces of the blazing sun, to the small streams of lava, and the dark reddish-black rocks all around her. She realized immediately that her blue clothing made her stand out like a landmark. This only made her hike her guard up even further, every progressing step she took being done with much wariness and caution. She could not stress the issue at hand any further to herself--she was at an obvious disadvantage. She figured that if she couldn't win, that she would just have to last. Defense was her main game, and she planned to play her cards accordingly in this fight, regardless of her opponent.
