But, her power punch is about the same as earth bending, only a tad different. And Katara is a trained fighter. What was the point of the north pole? To train Katara. As you saw, she was a strong water bender already, she just needed more training. And because you don't have a teacher doesn't mean you cant learn. Katara has faced countless opponents and has learned tactics. Katara has been able to hold her own, while Sakura has always had a helper for herself. Naruto, or Grandma from shippuuden(cant remember her name, haven't watched the show in a while). What I am saying is that in a real fight, Katara is trained. Sakura, in a real fight, isn't. She always needs someone. Still, Sakura has her heal powers and might be able to stand against Katara.

katara is trained, yes, but sakura has already faced much better water moves than katara can dish out. As far as sakura being usless in a fight or just a helper, that was true until shippuuden.
sakura has faced off with moves better than katara has to offer.
Katara has never seen anything close to some of the moves that sakura uses. (replacement, running on tress, etc)

Katara is an over-all well-rounded water bender.
Sakura is an over-all well-rounded fighter.
Katara's abilities are limited to water moves
Sakura's abilities are limited to Chakra (she can learn more Jutsus)
Katara has had to face earth, water, and fire attacks
Sakura has had to face earth, wood, wind, water, fire, illusions, ressurecting, manipulative, mind altering jutsus as well as fight hand-to-hand combat
.... I have faith in Katara's abilities, but compared to Sakura's experience I think she'll have an incredibly tough battle.

Also if Sakura lands one punch on Katara, she's done for. It is just as Kakashi said on like the 3rd episode of the shippuuden, Sakura can take anyone out with just a punch. And that's thanks to grandma Tsunade.
