Today is september 10th and CERN has begun the process of making their LHC(Large Hadron Collider) operational. The actual experiment will occur a few weeks later. This experiment can lead to a huge step forward in science or lead to the formation of a black hole which could swallow us all!Incidentally they are trying to recreate the big bang in this experiment.

if they really are trying to recreated the big bang, then they are idiots.
who do they think they are? Gods? Supernaturals? Chuck Norris?

i read up on this too. the machine is an atom crusher. they're using it to discover our "place in the universe" and discover the secrets behind the big bang.
it wouldn't create a huge black hole to suck us in, anyway. it apparently could've created billions of tiny microssopic black holes that would've most likely fizzled out and wouldn't do much damage. but some people started saying the black holes would sink to the core of the earth, form one big massive black hole, blah blah blah. it would take a total of 15 months to suck the planet into a black hole, anyway.
so anyway, whoever thought of this machine is, imo, a retard for risking human kind to find out about the big bang. there are somethings people aren't meant to know.
oh and i heard on the radio that the experiment took place at 3am eastern time this morning. looks like were all still alive. hope this cleared things up..

it brings up the science vs. religion debate again... if there really is a god, then ther is no big bang to recreate...
even if there isn't, I still think that some things were not meant for us to know... ~Tera~

this is a particle accelerator i believe, not an atom crusher.
the thing that happened at 3am was a test run to make sure the machine worked i believe.

It was. There was particle acceleration, but they have not yet sent two particle streams in opposite directions and collided them yet. Once they do that, they're hoping that it will recreate the effects of the Big Bang. Not the event itself, other wise we'd create a universe, destroying our own in the process. But we want to make a small, contained event that will replecate the event, so that we can study it's stages and discover more about the world.
For scientists, and philosopher's, this is an incredibly important thing. I for one wanna know how it all started, and this experiment might just show us that, or at least bring us closer to the answer.

it's not gonna bring us closer to anything...
even if there isn't a god, there are still some thins that we as feeble-minded humans were just not meant to know...
and of course, if there IS a god, then this is a step backward.

Well, if we weren't meant to know, then I guesss we wont know. Maybe we weren't meant to take over the world, removing all other animals from anywhere near our level of power on the planet. But, that's how we evolved. We also evolved a curiosity... which is how we've done all we've done.
We don't know what we'll find out, but whatever it is, I'm sure it'll be worth learning, if it's anything at all.
Of course, I don't see religion in any way affecting this... depending on how the person in question see's religion.

Well, the theory of evolution is valid and has evidence to support it, unlike certain others...

Yeah, I know. Bone structures don't "adapt".

Growth doesn't affect bone structure. Evolution affects bone structure. Natural selection affects bone structure. Mutation affects bone structure.
