hmmm sometimes i wonder lol...(you do alot of good posting) one random post wont hurt u. and back to topic i still gotta say that it was sozins comit that did most of the work for the firebenders.

well on the map the lil symbols mean fire, fierce; water, peaceful; earth,strong; air, harmony. thats so true though. fire is fierce and consumes everything in its path. and like most people said, sozins comet gave them an advantage. plus the fire nation is ruthless and had huge motivation. the other countries only have a little since most of there major cities are destroyed.

Agreed alot of it had to do with the technology but still the Sozen planed that the comit would be the firenations trump card when he started the war after he absorbed the energy from the comit. timing was perfect because roku had just died as well.

Surprise.
The Airbenders are peacefull, they do not kill. And everyone was friends, Firenation turns up Airbenders smile, off their pie. Boom, Firebenders burn faces.
Earthkingdom, news takes a while to travel, so they have a short time to prepare, luckily they're defensive so they can withstand for a long time.
Water Tribes. Large continents, small habitable areas. Small nations. Easier to defend due to natural defenses.
All the nations were peacefull until Sozin went to attack, and no avatar was there to keep the peace so they were unhindered. And with the metoer giving them some power ups they could overwhelm the other benders easily, forcing them into retreat and si gaining quick footholds in other lands.
Also its possible that a small nation can have a large population. Britian has the twice the population of France, a much larger country.

it's not that hard to understand. think about in the real world. Great Britain is a pretty small island compared to many other nations and they had the strongest overseas empire during the 1700-1800's.
but i just had another thought. when they show the world map of the avatar world. it's a flat map. does that mean their world is flat and if you go too far you'll fall off the edge. it must be because if not the firenation would have travled west and attacked the earthkingdom from the other side.

it's the same reasons we humans can overpower any other type of creature on this planet: because we're smart (well, intelligent enough to create new ways of doing things; smart is debatable) and utilize resources in a unique way.
