yeah. And the fire nation is more aggressive. Earth seems more like a defensive tribe than offensive. ~Iroh~

I'll start from the start...
The Earth Kingdom is the largest of the nations with the biggest population, but relatively few benders. The Air Nomads are the opposite, with a small population, but all of them are benders.
All of the nations have about the same amount of benders, so that wouldn't have been a factor.
The way the Fire Nation is winning is because of their first strikes.
They knew that they couldn't take out the Earth Kingdom immediately, they were too big.
The Water Tribes were separated, and the North Pole's defenses would be too hard to break.
The Air Nomads would have no defenses, and once you reached their temple's, you could wipe them out with all your extra power. Also, the Avatar would next be an Airbender, so the Air Nomads where chosen for the main strike.
They overwhelmed an destroyed all of the Airbenders, and eventually even the "Greatest Airbender In The World", Gyatso, fell (though he took a few of them with him).
Now they are dead, no help can come to the other nations, and because of their superior technology, they own the sea's.
If Aang hadn't defrosted because of Katara, the Fire Nation would already be in control, because they would have won at the North Pole, and from there attacked the Earth Kingdom from the north.

What do I get?
Nothing, as usual.

here's what i think.
the fire nation destroyed the air nomads first with the help of sozins comet,(they had been waiting to do this for 12 years)
they had not found the avatar's dead body but decided he must have been killed any way
so they attacked the southern water tribe because it is the next smallest amount of land and since the avatar had been 'killed' they were going to kill all waterbenders. (or at least capture them)
but this was taking way to long to kill off the south, if they tried the north next they would defanatly take longer then they wanted to. so they switched to the earth kingdom.
the earth kingdom had not gotten word all around the land. so some of them were not able to defend themselves. there for the fire nation found they were taking over the earth kingdom fast.
when aang comes the earth kingdom is pretty downsized. they find out he went to the north pole so they start an attack. when they lose they switch back to the earth kindom.
i can't figure out how to put my exact thought down on this so this is what came out.
also in Bitter Work Iroh was teaching zuko about the nations. as he was drawing each ones insignia he was explaining about them, he said something to the effect of the
"fire nation has feirce determination and will to do anything."
or something to that effect.

well when you look at the earth nation being as big as it is they've gotten pretty far.

again we should also consider the fact that the earth kindom may be large but it is very easy to conqure due to the fact that it is spread out and not united under one kindom. there are many small kindoms as well as two big ones( omashu and ba sing se). also when we rate progress we should also consider that the firenation IS significantly smaller than the earth kindom so figuratively speaking we can say that they have made alot of progress based on their own reasources and the mammoth size of the earth kingdom

Yes, but still, if they had a real advantage it shouldn't have taken 100 years.
Their strategies needed better planning in the original years.
I can't believe General Fong's base survived that long!
It would have been one of my first Earth Kindom targets, because it was the biggest threat. It was close enough to launch an attack on my land!
Oh, well. I guess they wanted a hundred year war.

Well I don't really know but I think it might be because the Earth Kingdom and the Water Tribes think that the all the Avatars are dead and probably they think that they can't defeat the Fire Nation without the Air benders help. That's my opinion but I'm not sure.
