Aang calls Katara his water bending "master." xD
In Master Pakku's eyes, he saw that Katara had the skills and discipline to be a master of water bending, so he dubbed Katara a water bending master. We all know she is learning, everybody learns something new, and she is dang good! Besides, with her 'master' status, she can easily give out bending lessons. So I think Katara is technically a water bending master (by Pakku) and has potential to be a great one.

To be a master you must be a a seasoned fighter, and mastered the art threw and threw. Katara is still learning. She has been training for how long again? btw, you live and learn all the time, even if you're a master. That's true, you always learn new things. Katara is already a powerful bender, she almost can be called a Master Bender.

no katara is not that good a bender, ... !!!! Have you actually seen the show? And if, what brings you to say that? Like Katara or not, but she's been depicted as the most skilled and fastest learning waterbender there is. The only ones who showed equal ore more talent and power were old master Pakku and the old avatars. - She has been declared a master bender by Pakku, a master himself, at end of book 1. - She has shown the skill, technique and power of a master bender during book 2 and 3. - She has been recognized as a master bender by Hama, a master herself, in the middle of book 3. So where is the question?

Yea Princess Azula what the hell? I may not think she has earned the title of master but she his one of the best benders in the show. Hell she outfought Azula in the end of book 2.

Considering the fact that Katara started off by teaching herself how to bend, then picked up on skills Master Paku had taught her so swiftly, I'd have to say that she will be a master within only a few more years (by few, I mean, like, at the most, 5). She is incredibly skilled and learned to bloodbend a human fairly swiftly, considering that Hamma herself took weeks/months to master rats.

She is incredibly skilled and learned to bloodbend a human fairly swiftly, considering that Hamma herself took weeks/months to master rats. Why is that? I know that we people in the real world are used to think of masters as people who trained and learned for years, more likely even decades. But obviously this is not how it works in ATLA. Katara has been declared a master waterbender by TWO old masters. One of them she was even able to defeat in battle. She proved being able to use every technique those two old masters used, and then some. She expressed wisdom and patience beyond her years and even the ability to transcend her knowledge about bending to other elements just like Iroh did ("Bitter work"). So only because she was able to learn what it takes to be a master within a year and not within decades, it shouldn't be appropriate to call her a master? So it's time now that should decide about mastership and not power, skill and knowledge? What kind of logic is that?

Hay you keep bring up that she was declared a master waterbender by TWO old masters, but keep in mind if you were to call and apple a bear would you be right?

That figure of speach would only apply, if someone talks about something he doesn't know anything about. But it was not Sokka or Toph or the cabbage man who declared Katara a master waterbender, it were two seasoned and experienced people who were masters themselves. Of course you may assume that Pakku and Hama didn't know what they were speaking about, but why would that be? And of course the fact remains that Katara showed the proper skill, power and knowledge to be a master, too.

The only way to be a master is to be seasoned and experienced. Katara is neither. There is no dought she can be a master but not yet. That's like calling a sapling a oak.
