Do you consider Azula a master?
She can shoot more powerful flames than we have seen any other character produce, and even managed to fight Aang, Toph and Sokka without taking a hit when she couldn't Bend.
But, if you watch Crossraods of Destiny, you will see that Katara is beating her before Zuko steps in. True, she had ample water at that point, but Azula has almost unlimited fire power.
If she can beat Azula, and even hold off Zuko and Azula, then I think that earns her mastery.
I believe her to be a master, and I challenge anyone to defy my logic and live!

i would have to say katara is a master waterbender...she thinks like a master bender would (i.e. the runaway)....her waterbending skill is unprecidented...i would even go far to say she is better than aang....katara has shown throughout a great deals mastery throughout many episodes...she defiantly earned it....

Well, she is better than Aang, unless he enters the Avatar State (Which he can't, so... no)
Eventually Aang would, of course, have surpassed her, but for now, Katara is a better Waterbender.

I would have to say Azuela is a master. She is a prodigy, and has had the best training that her father could threaten people to teach, or Azuela intimidate to teach. Will her being a Master do her any good? Only time will tell.

I wonder, 2 of the four elements are material and landscape based so technically If they had a whole bunch of that matter they would be equal as someone who doesn't need matter?
I think that because Katara had so much water at the moment She was beyond Azula's level because otherwise it wouldn't be balanced. It wouldn't be a battle of skill, but a battle of terrain. I think that since Waterbenders cannot always have their water with them there element is naturally a bit stronger to even the playing field a bit and thus having alot of water makes her beyond the level.
Since Fire, and Air are things we need to live ( fire thrives on Air) and thus they would have unlimited ammo. Thus they would have to be a little weaker to compensate for what I like to call" The Power Gap ".
Earth not so much because Metal is probably relatively new and the art of Earthbending hasn't been able to adapt within a benders body to become stronger as a self defense mechanism.
I think that the benders of today will be stronger then the ones of tomorrow through the natural process of evolution.
I think that however, Katara is indeed a master. A Master is not someone all knowing.

To be a master you must be a a seasoned fighter, and mastered the art threw and threw. Katara is still learning. She has been training for how long again? I agree with you. Katara is too young to be a master.

Katara should be considered a master, seeing how young she and how advanced she's become in the past year. Water neutralizes Fire, so she and Azula could be equally matched, IF Katara had enough water. That's the only problem with Katara and Waterbending. And she is better than Aang, because she specializes in Water, while Aang has to focus on all four elements

True, Azula may be able to firebend more powerful flames, but now, i think Zuko could take her, after all, she still channels firebending through rage, where as Zuko and Aang have found the original source. This also explains why toph is an excellent earthbender, she learned from the original earthbenders, badgermoles!
